[A quest for a new superconducting state]

Description: The authors report on progress of work for the past twelve months, and the work which is planned for the coming year. They have been working on the theory of the long range proximity effect discovered experimentally on Bi-Ag-Tl(2223) sandwiches during the period of the previous grant. This has led to the prediction of a novel effect which they refer to as a ``pair echo`` which occurs in these sandwiches and is analogous to the familiar ``spin echo`` seen in certain NMR experiments. Experimental… more

Angular dependence of the Josephson critical current across c-axis twist junctions of layered superconductors.

Description: The authors studied theoretically the c-axis Josephson critical current for bicrystals of high temperature superconductors twisted an angle {phi}{sub 0} about the c-axis with respect to each other. They used the effective Lawrence-Doniach models appropriate for the cases of pure s-wave or d{sub x{sup 2}-y{sup 2}}-wave order parameters, and of a dominant d{sub x{sup 2}-y{sup 2}}-wave order parameter combined with a subdominant one of either s-wave or d{sub xy}-wave form, as a function of the tem… more

YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-{delta}} thick films on Ni-based alloys

Description: YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-{delta}} (YBCO) thick films were prepared on Ni based alloys with an ion beam assisted deposited and textured yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) buffer layer. Transport critical current densities (J{sub c}) over 1 {times} 10{sup 6} A/cm{sup 2} at 75 K, and over 1 {times} 10{sup 7} A/cm{sup 2} at 4 K were obtained in the 1 {mu}m thick YCBO films. Zero field critical current of 198 Amps at 75 K was obtained in a 2 {mu}m thick and 1 cm wide YBCO film. Angular dependence me… more

Novel technologies for SO{sub x}/NO{sub x} removal from flue gas. [Quarterly] technical report, September 1--November 30, 1994

Description: The goal of this project is to develop a cost-effective low temperature deNO{sub x}, catalyst to be used in the Research Triangle Institute (RTI)-Waterloo SO{sub x}/NO{sub x} process for boiler retrofit applications. The performance goal of the catalyst is to convert over 80% of the NO in the flue gas at a temperature as low as 150{degrees}C in the presence of 4 % O{sub 2} and 10 % water. In this quarter a two prong approach was used: Northwestern University concentrated their effort to better … more

Phase relationships and cation disorder in RE{sub 1+x}Ba{sub 2-x}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7+{delta}}, RE = Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd

Description: Unlike Y123 which forms only a stoichiometric compound, the light arare earth elements (LRE) form a solid solution LRE{sub 1+x}Ba{sub 2-x}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7+{delta}} (LRE123ss), with increasing substitution of the LRE{sup 3+} for the Ba{sup 2+} as the ionic radii of the LRE increases. The sub-solidus phase relationships around the LRE123ss change for La, Pr and Nd, but are similar for Sm and Gd. However, the solubility limit decreases with decreasing ionic radii. In addition, the solubility limit… more

Superconducting Thallium Oxide and Mercury Oxide Film

Description: Previously we reported on a two-layer electrodeposition process of thallium oxide superconductors that showed transport critical current density above 106 A/cm2 at 77 K in zero field. In this article, we report our effort to convert an electrodeposited thick film of (Tl,Bi,Pb)2(Sr,Ba)2Ca1Cu2Ox to (Hg,Bi,Pb)2(Sr,Ba)2Ca1Cu2Ox by the cation-exchange process. We are also reporting magneto-optical imaging data on Tl oxide superconductor films, which are compared with YBCO. Magneto-optical imaging pr… more

Study of High {Tc} Superconducting Thin Films Grown by MOCVD. Final Report, July 1, 1986--April 30, 1990

Description: Work is described briefly, which was carried out on development of techniques to grow metal-semiconductor superlattices (artificially layered materials) and on the copper oxide based susperconductors (naturally layered materials). The current growth technique utilized is metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). CdTe, PbTe, La, LaTe, and Bi{sub 2}Te{sub 3} were deposited, mostly on GaAs. Several YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7} compounds were obtained with possible superconductivity at tempera… more

Structural phase transitions and superconductivity in lanthanum copper oxides

Description: Despite the enormous effort expended over the past ten years to determine the mechanism underlying high temperature superconductivity in cuprates there is still no consensus on the physical origin of this fascinating phenomenon. This is a consequence of a number of factors, among which are the intrinsic difficulties in understanding the strong electron correlations in the copper oxides, determining the roles played by antiferromagnetic interactions and low dimensionality, analyzing the complex … more

Chemistry and Materials Science Department annual report, 1988--1989

Description: This is the first annual report of the Chemistry & Materials Science (C&MS) Department. The principal purpose of this report is to provide a concise summary of our scientific and technical accomplishments for fiscal years 1988 and 1989. The report is also tended to become part of the archival record of the Department`s activities. We plan to publish future editions annually. The activities of the Department can be divided into three broad categories. First, C&MS staff are assigned by the matrix… more

[Band electronic structures and crystal packing forces: Progress report, July 1, 1989--December 13, 1991]

Description: This report briefly summaries our research accomplishments made during the period of July 1, 1989 to December 13, 1991. A number of significant progresses were achieved in our studies of several different classes of low-dimensional solid state materials. On the basis of tight-binding band electronic structure calculations, we investigated the electronic properties of various organic conducting salts, cuprate superconductors, and transition-metal oxide and chalcogenide metals to find structure-p… more
