Particle and energy transport studies on TFTR and implications for helium ash in future fusion devices

Description: Particle and energy transport in tokamak plasmas have long been subjects of vigorous investigation. Present-day measurement techniques permit radially resolved studies of the transport of electron perturbations, low- and high-Z impurities, and energy. In addition, developments in transport theory provide tools that can be brought to bear on transport issues. Here, we examine local particle transport measurements of electrons, fully-stripped thermal helium, and helium-like iron in balanced-injec… more

Charge exchange photoproduction and the a{sub 1}(1260)

Description: Although recent analyses of {tau}-lepton decay and a reanalysis of hadron production data gave consistent results for the mass of the a{sub 1}({approximately}1250 MeV), other results, both experimental and theoretical, have suggested a significantly smaller value for this parameter. The purpose of this talk is to present our data on the charge-exchange photoproduction reaction, {gamma}{rho} {yields} {Delta}{sup ++}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup {minus}}. Our data derive from a hydrogen bu… more

[Comparison of group transfer, inner sphere and outer sphere electron transfer mechanisms of organometallic complexes: Progress report]

Description: We have constructed an infrared stopped-flow spectrophotometer and initiated a study of the mechanisms of reactions that involve a change in the oxidation state of organometallic complexes. In this summary we highlight our results on reactions (1) that formally involve exchange of a charged species between two metal carbonyl anions, (2) that involve addition of an electron to, or removal of an electron from organometallic complexes that contain a metal-metal bond, and (3) between coordination c… more

High-$beta$ capture and mirror confinement of laser-produced plasmas. Semiannual report, August 1, 1973--January 31, 1974

Description: Experimental studies aimed at improving the reproducibility of the dense, laser produced plasmas were performed. Efforts in this area were concerned with the positioning of the target particle more accurately in the laser focal region and with preventing the premature displacement of the particle from the focal region. To address this latter problem, the single beam laser system of the previous experiments was modified to permit the simultaneous irradiation of the lithium hydride pellet by two … more

A new technique for the study of charge transfer in multiply charged ion-ion collisions

Description: While large cross sections (>10{sup {minus}16} cm{sup 2}) have been predicted for resonant charge transfer in ion-ion collisions, no experimental data exist for multiply charged systems. A novel technique is being developed at the ORNL ECR facility to allow study of symmetric charge exchange in multiply charged ion-ion collisions using a single ion source. Specific intra-beam charge transfer collisions occurring in a well-defined interaction region labeled by negative high voltage are identifie… more

Selection and Design of Ion Sources for Use at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility

Description: The Holifield Radioactive Ion beam Facility now under construction at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory will use the 25-MV tandem accelerator for the acceleration of radioactive ion beams to energies appropriate for research in nuclear physics; negative ion beams are, therefore, required for injection into the tandem accelerator. Because charge exchange is an efficient means for converting initially positive ion beams to negative ion beams, both positive and negative ion sources are viable opti… more

Energetic neutral atom imaging with the Polar CEPPAD/IPS instrument: Initial forward modeling results

Description: Although the primary function of the CEP-PAD/IPS instrument on Polar is the measurement of energetic ions in-situ, it has also proven to be a very capable Energetic neutral Atom (ENA) imager. Raw ENA images are currently being constructed on a routine basis with a temporal resolution of minutes during both active and quiet times. However, while analyses of these images by themselves provide much information on the spatial distribution and dynamics of the energetic ion population in the ring cur… more
