Distribution of Transfused Tritiated Cytidine Labeled Leukocytes and Red Cells in the Bone Marrow of Normal and Irradiated Rats

Description: In normal rats and after whole-body irradiation with 550-r x-rays, the fate in the bone marrow of labeled nucleated and red cells of transfused peripheral blood was observed autoradiographically. Labeled nucleated cells, most of which were lymphocyte-like cells, readily migrated into the marrow parenchyma in normal animals (2 cells/1000 parenchymal cells/hr). Following irradiation to at least 27 to 51 hr, this migration appeared to be relatively increased. Beyond this time, parenchymal areas we… more

STUDIES IN CONTACT MICRO-RADIOGRAPHY

Description: A study was made of contact microradiographic techniques for the x-ray evaluation of tin specimens or selected small regions in large specimens. Extraneous absorbers such as air and the film holder were removed to permit the use of low-energy x rays, and high-resolution plates were used which permit magnifications up to 500x. Microradiographs are presented for graphite-coated uranium carbide particles, nickel screen, thin graphite section, and various fibrous materials. It is concluded that the… more

DEVELOPMENT OF PLUTONIUM-BEARING FUEL MATERIALS. Progress Report, July 1 through September 30, 1962

Description: Characterization and sintering results indicate significant differences between UO/sub 2/--35 wt% PuO/sub 2/ and the compositions containing lesser (<20 wt %) amounts of PuO/sub 2/. PuO/sub 2/ has now also been prepared by plutonium hydroxide precipitation. Sintering studies have shown that satisfictory density is readily attained with these PuO/sub 2/ materials. Development of analytical chemistry procedures required for support of the fuel cycle program is continuing. The x-ray emission proce… more

COMPOUNDS OF DIVALENT-LANTHANIDES. PREPARATION, OPTICAL PROPERTIES, AND CRYSTAL STRUCTURE

Description: Preparation of the sulfates, carbonates, and fluorides of divalent samarium, europium, and ytterbium is described. Crystallographic data from both x-ray and optical examination of the compounds are presented. Due to the instability of these plus (II) salts, the precision of the measurement is affected, but sufficient for characterization. A simple and convenient electrolytic method was devised to prepare the divalent sulfates. By metathetical reactions, carbonates and fluorides were prepared. T… more
