Liquid Metal Engineering Center (LMEC) annual technical progress report, January-December 1975

Description: During operation of the prototype FFTF sodium pump, it is necessary to know the position of the pump shaft relative to the sodium-lubricated hydrostatic bearing journals. Performance of the Kaman proximity measurement system was known to be affected by the type of media between the gap to be measured. Since Kaman Sciences Corp. did not have liquid sodium testing capabilities, LMEC was requested to evaluate a spare prototype system. Determination of the sodium performance characteristics of the … more

Final Technical Report: Supporting Wind Turbine Research and Testing - Gearbox Durability Study

Description: The combination of premature failure of wind turbine gearboxes and the downtime caused by those failures leads to an increase in the cost of electricity produced by the wind. There is a need for guidance to asset managers regarding how to maximize the longevity of their gearboxes in order to help keep the cost of wind energy as low as possible. A low cost of energy supports the US Department of Energy's goal of achieving 20% of the electricity in the United States produced by wind by the year 2… more

Heat Flow and Gas Hydrates on the Continental Margin of India: Building on Results from NGHP Expedition 01

Description: The Indian National Gas Hydrate Program (NGHP) Expedition 01 presented the unique opportunity to constrain regional heat flow derived from seismic observations by using drilling data in three regions on the continental margin of India. The seismic bottom simulating reflection (BSR) is a well-documented feature in hydrate bearing sediments, and can serve as a proxy for apparent heat flow if data are available to estimate acoustic velocity and density in water and sediments, thermal conductivity,… more

Application of Self-Propagating High Temperature Synthesis to the Fabrication of Actinide Bearing Nitride and Other Ceramic Nuclear Fuels

Description: The project uses an exothermic combustion synthesis reaction, termed self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS), to produce high quality, reproducible nitride fuels and other ceramic type nuclear fuels (cercers and cermets, etc.) in conjunction with the fabrication of transmutation fuels. The major research objective of the project is determining the fundamental SHS processing parameters by first using manganese as a surrogate for americium to produce dense Zr-Mn-N ceramic compounds. The… more

Development of Powder Diffraction Analysis Tools for aNanocrystalline Specimen: An Emphasis upon NiTi (Nitinol)

Description: Powder diffraction is a specialized technique whose investigatory limits are constrained by the scale of the crystallized substance being scanned versus the probe beam used. When disparate in scale, with the photon spot size larger than the crystal being probed, many are employed, the resulting diffraction image being cast from all possible incident angles, constructing {chi}-arcs containing information about the crystalline structure of the material under examination. Of particular interest to… more

EXCITATION OF STRUCTURAL RESONANCE DUE TO A BEARING FAILURE

Description: Vibration due to a bearing failure in a pump created significant vibrations in a fifteen foot by fifteen foot by eight feet tall mounting platform due to excitation of resonant frequencies. In this particular application, an 18,000 pound pump was mounted to a structural steel platform. When bearing damage commenced, the platform vibrated with sufficient magnitude that conversations could not be heard within forty feet of the pump. Vibration analysis determined that the frequency of the bearing … more

Efficiency Improvement through Reduction in Friction and Wear in Powertrain Systems

Description: The objective of this project is to improve the efficiency of truck drivelines through reduction of friction and parasitic losses in transmission and drive axles. Known efficiencies for these products exceeded 97 percent, so the task was not trivial. The project relied on a working relationship between modeling and hardware testing. Modeling was to shorten the development cycle by guiding the selection of materials, processes and strategies. Bench top and fixture tests were to validate the mode… more

Methane Recovery from Hydrate-bearing Sediments

Description: Gas hydrates are crystalline compounds made of gas and water molecules. Methane hydrates are found in marine sediments and permafrost regions; extensive amounts of methane are trapped in the form of hydrates. Methane hydrate can be an energy resource, contribute to global warming, or cause seafloor instability. This study placed emphasis on gas recovery from hydrate bearing sediments and related phenomena. The unique behavior of hydrate-bearing sediments required the development of special rese… more

Prosthetic knee design by simulation

Description: Although 150,000 total knee replacement surgeries are performed annually in North America, current designs of knee prostheses have mechanical problems that include a limited range of motion, abnormal gait patterns, patellofemoral joint dysfunction, implant loosening or subsidence, and excessive wear. These problems fall into three categories: failure to reproduce normal joint kinematics, which results in altered limb function; bone-implant interface failure; and material failure. Modern compute… more
