Organic Coolant Reactor Program Quarterly Report, January 1-March 31, 1962

Description: The possible effects of a hydrogen atmosphere in reducing film deposition were studied in the large circulating loop and in rocking cell and pyrolytic capsule tests. At H/sub 2/ pressures of 200 to 400 psig no reduction in film weight deposited was observed in the loop tests, and in the pyrolytic tests film deposits were doubled. Heat conductivity of the films was much higher however. ln these high ash films the inorganic constituent was found to be alpha -Fe rather than the usual magnetite, wh… more

Hydrogeology and hydrodynamics of coral reef pore waters

Description: A wide variety of forces can produce head gradients that drive the flow and advective mixing of internal coral reef pore waters. Oscillatory gradients that produce mixing result from wave and tide action. Sustained gradients result from wave and tide-induced setup and ponding, from currents impinging on the reef structure, from groundwater heads, and from density differenced (temperature or salinity gradients). These gradients and the permeabilities and porosities of reef sediments are such tha… more

Comparison of Nozzle and Flow Straighteners for Tank Waste Sluicing Applications Letter Report

Description: Nozzles and flow straighteners were compared to assess the relative quality of the water streams for sluicing waste from underground storage tankes. The criteria for comparison were 1) the impact force produced by the streams over a range of distance from the nozzle impinging on target plates, and 2) the coherence of the streams as manifest by the variation of force on targets of two different sizes. It was determined that 1) the standard Hanford flow straightener is measurable less effective t… more

Complex interfacial flows. Final report for period August 1, 1997 - July 31, 2001

Description: The objective of this grant was to study complex interfacial flows. Here we report on several problems considered. In particular we have investigated the motion of a liquid along a second liquid interface, we have investigated a canonical problem associated with the rupture of a viscous interface, we have investigated the dynamics of a gas bubble or drop in an inclined parallel walled channel under gravity with and without the presence of surfactants, we have studied the dynamics of a dry spot … more
