Study of neutron focusing at the Texas Cold Neutron Source: Progress report

Description: The purpose of this three year study is to develop a neutron focusing system to be used with the Texas Cold Neutron Source (TCNS) to produce an intense beam of neutrons. A prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA) facility will also be designed, setup, and tested under this DOE grant. During the first year of the DOE grant, a new procedure was developed and used to design a focusing converging guide consisting of truncated rectangular cone sections. Detailed calculations were performed using a 3-… more

A METALLOGRAPHIC STUDY OF GAS BEHAVIOR IN URANIUM IRRADIATED WITH ALPHA PARTICLES

Description: The behavior of helium in uranium and in several uranium alloys was studied metallographically after room temperature irradiation with alpha particles in a cyclotron, followed by various heat treatments. The observed gas bubbles were classified in two classes, differing in size, concentration, and mechanism of formation. These bubbles appear to resemble those resulting from fission product gases in neutron-irradiated uranium; the findings of this study seem to be applicable to the understanding… more

The "Nuclear Car Wash": A Scanner to Detect Illicit Special Nuclear Material in Cargo Containers

Description: There is an urgent need to improve the reliability of screening cargo containers for illicit nuclear material that may be hidden there for terrorist purposes. A screening system is described for detection of fissionable material hidden in maritime cargo containers. The system makes use of a low intensity neutron beam for producing fission; and the detection of the abundant high-energy {gamma} rays emitted in the {beta}-decay of short-lived fission products and {beta}-delayed neutrons. The abund… more
