Diagnostic Systems Approach to Watershed Management

Description: The water quality of discharge from the surface water system is ultimately dictated by land use and climate within the watershed. Water quality has vastly improved from point source reduction measures, yet, non-point source pollutants continue to rise. 30 to 40% of rivers still do not meet water quality standards for reasons that include impact from urban storm water runoff, agricultural and livestock runoff, and loss of wetlands. Regulating non-point source pollutants proves to be difficult si… more

RCRA Groundwater Quality Assessment Report for Waste Management Area S-SX (November 1997 through April 2000)

Description: This report updates a continuing groundwater quality assessment for single-shell tank Waste Management Area S-SX at the Hanford Site. This report covers November 1997 through April 2000. Major new findings include the following: groundwater contamination continues to persist in both the northern half of the Waste Management Area as well as the southern half; evaluation of changes in water table elevations indicates a gradual shift in the direction of groundwater flow from the southeast to a mor… more

Final Technical Report [Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons with curved surfaces: Models and precursors for fullerenes]

Description: Highlights of selected achievements are briefly outlined. The bowl-to-bowl inversion barrier was measured for a hydrocarbon on the C{sub 60} surface larger than corannulene; {Delta}G was determined to be 27.8 kcal/mol. A new route to the preparation of tetraketone involving benzeneseleninic anhydride was developed that represents a significant improvement in the overall process making semibuckminsterfullerene more accessible. The first crystallographically characterized transition metal buckybo… more

Biogeochemical Proxies in Scleractinian Corals used to Reconstruct Ocean Circulation

Description: We utilize monthly {sup 14}C data derived from coral archives in conjunction with ocean circulation models to address two questions: (1) how does the shallow circulation of the tropical Pacific vary on seasonal to decadal time scales and (2) which dynamic processes determine the mean vertical structure of the equatorial Pacific thermocline. Our results directly impact the understanding of global climate events such as the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). To study changes in ocean circulatio… more

Evaluation of the Washington State Weatherization Assistance Program

Description: Since 1976, the national Weatherization Assistance Program has been working to improve the energy efficiency of dwelling units occupied by low-income residents. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and implemented by state and local agencies, the program is active in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This report focuses on the recent outcomes of Washington State's weatherization efforts. The performance of the Washington Weatherization Program is of interest because few evaluati… more

Components and interfaces of a process management system for parallel programs.

Description: Parallel jobs are different from sequential jobs and require a different type of process management. We present here a process management system for parallel programs such as those written using MPI. A primary goal of the system, which we call MPD (for multipurpose daemon), is to be scalable. By this we mean that startup of interactive parallel jobs comprising thousands of processes is quick, that signals can be quickly delivered to processes, and that stdin, stdout, and stderr are managed intu… more

Secure, efficient data transport and replica management for high-performance data-intensive computing.

Description: An emerging class of data-intensive applications involve the geographically dispersed extraction of complex scientific information from very large collections of measured or computed data. Such applications arise, for example, in experimental physics, where the data in question is generated by accelerators, and in simulation science, where the data is generated by supercomputers. So-called Data Grids provide essential infrastructure for such applications, much as the Internet provides essential… more

Characterization Activities to Evaluate Chlorinated Solvent Discharges to Tims Branch from the A/M Area of the Savannah River Site

Description: The objective of this investigation was to identify those regions of plume outcrop along Tims Branch southeast of A/M Area and to establish fixed monitoring points along the seepline to evaluate proposed remediation needs and to support long-term monitoring activities in the vicinity of the seepline. The characterization approach employed in completing these tasks was dynamic and graded. Three stages of characterization were used to evaluate the outcrop region, with the results from each of the… more

Addressing Environmental Externalities from Electricity Generation in South Carolina

Description: This paper gives estimates of the externalities associated with the increased likelihood of health and environmental impacts that result from exposure to pollutants emitted by electric power plants in South Carolina. A new method for estimating externalities is developed, results are presented, and policy-related implications are discussed. The results suggest that the environmental externalities are noteworthy and would affect electricity consumption if they are internalized and passed on to c… more

Replica selection in the Globus Data Grid.

Description: The Globus Data Grid architecture provides a scalable infrastructure for the management of storage resources and data that are distributed across Grid environments. These services are designed to support a variety of scientific applications, ranging from high-energy physics to computational genomics, that require access to large amounts of data (terabytes or even petabytes) with varied quality of service requirements. By layering on a set of core services, such as data transport, security, and … more
