UTSI/CFFF MHD PROGRAM COMPLETION AND RELATED ACTIVITY

Description: In this final technical report, UTSI summarizes work completed under DOE Contract No. DE-AC22-95PC95231. This work began on the contract effective date, September 15, 1995 and is continuing on a very small basis to complete the groundwater remediation as of this date. The work scope required UTSI to continue to maintain the DOE Coal Fired Flow Facility and keep it in readiness for anticipated testing. This effort was terminated in September 1998 by DOE stop-work letter. Work continued on report… more

A model for the prediction of Nb sub 3 Sn critical current as a function of field, temperature, strain, and radiation damage

Description: Conductors designed for fusion machines must operate at high fields, under large mechanical loads, and in a high neutron flux. Present designs favor the use of Nb{sub 3}Sn with force-cooling by supercritical helium to extract large nuclear and ac loss heat loads. Consequently, the magnet designer must have a good knowledge of the critical current of the superconductor as a function of field, strain, temperature, and radiation damage. Expanding on work by Hampshire, et al. and Ekin, combined wit… more

A characterization of internal-Sn Nb sub 3 Sn superconductors for use in the Proof of Principles (PoP) coil

Description: High performance Ti-alloyed internal-Sn superconductors have been selected for use in the Proof of Principles (PoP) coil, and a 1.0 m o.d., 0.4 m i.d., solenoid designed to produce fields up to 15 T. The PoP coil, which will use forced-flow Cable-In-Conduit Conductors (CICC), will operate at 4.2 K and moderate levels of conductor strain. Here we report the results of detailed characterizations of two proposed PoP coil Nb{sub 3}Sn 19 subelement superconductor wires of different topology. We have… more

Determination of the Six Turbulent Reynolds' Stresses by the Hot Wire Method for Arbitrary Turbulent Intensity and Geometry with Special Application to Axisymmetric Flow

Description: A relationship is derived between the mean square fluctuating current of a hot wire anemometer and the six turbulent Reynolds' stresses in the stream- coordinate system without employing the usual low turbulent intensity approximation. The relatively simple result is a consequence of assuming proportionality between the wire current reading and the perpendicular velocity component instead of the nonlinear dependence required by King's law. The assumption is valid for instruments equipped with t… more

Stress-rupture lifetimes of organic fiber-epoxy strands and pressure vessels

Description: Long-term behavior of filament-wound pressure vessels were tested, Kevlar 49 epoxy strands were studied in stress-rupture for more than a year. Because the strands are the smallest structural unit in filament winding, their behavior directly controls the performance of vessels. Five different stress levels were studied: 86, 80, 74, 68, and 50% of the mean ultimate tensile strength (UTS). At each stress level, approximately one-hundred strands were hung in a room maintained at 22 to 24/sup 0/C a… more

Nondestructive x-ray Scattering Characterization of High Temperature Superconducting Wires

Description: The purpose of this CRADA was to characterize the structural properties of the superconductor material within the wires in order to determine which processing procedures produce the best superconductor texture and phase development, and hence the best ultimate current carrying capacity.
