Charge distributions for radioactive aerosols in a bipolar atmosphere permeated by an electric field

Description: Steady-state charge distributions are obtained for radioactive aerosol particles in bipolar ionized atmospheres with concentrations of 10/sup 2/ to 10/sup 8/ ions/cm/sup 3/. Ion--particle attachment is based on a diffusion--conduction model with unequal ion mobilities. Asymptotic formulas for charge distributions are derived from charge transfer rate equations. Cases include low and high specific activities with weak and strong electric fields. Mean charge and variance are obtained for Poisson … more

A mobile remote sensing laboratory for water vapor, trace gas, aerosol, and wind speed measurements

Description: The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has developed a mobile field laboratory for remote measurement of atmospheric processes and observables that are important in global climate change, dispersal of hazardous materials, and atmospheric pollution. Specific observables of interest are water vapor, trace gases, aerosol size and density, wind, and temperature. The goal is to study atmospheric processes continuously for extended periods in remote field locations. This laboratory has just reach… more

Resuspension of plutonium: a progress report

Description: Progress is reported for a research program on the resuspension in the atmosphere of plutonium fallout deposited on the earth surface. The long-range goal of the resuspension studies is to produce a set of equations which can be used to predict the timedependent average concentration of resuspended material downwind from a source of any geometrical configuration and soil sunface characteristics. The experiments are conducted at the Nevada Test Site where plutonium-high explosive tests were perf… more
