Muon Acceleration

Description: One of the major motivations driving recent interest in FFAGs is their use for the cost-effective acceleration of muons. This paper summarizes the progress in this area that was achieved leading up to and at the FFAG workshop at KEK from July 7-12, 2003. Much of the relevant background and references are also given here, to give a context to the progress we have made.

Assessing Equivalent Viscous Damping Using Piping System Test Results

Description: The specification of damping for nuclear piping systems subject to seismic-induced motions has been the subject of many studies and much controversy. Damping estimation based on test data can be influenced by numerous factors, consequently leading to considerable scatter in damping estimates in the literature. At present, nuclear industry recommendations and nuclear regulatory guidance are not consistent on the treatment of damping for analysis of nuclear piping systems. Therefore, there is sti… more

Conceptual Design of a Capture Rf System for Muon Colliders.

Description: A conceptual RF System design provides a basis for a more detailed engineering study to explore the technical issues involved in fabricating and testing a capture RF system in a proton-driver target experiment. A large-bore 71 MHz cavity design is detailed which is self-consistent with a proton-driver target experiment at BNL. Analysis of cell to cell coupling in a linac composed of a string of such cavitites is presented.

PROCEEDINGS OF RIKEN BNL RESEARCH CENTER WORKSHOP, HADRON STRUCTURE FROM LATTICE QCD, MARCH 18 - 22, 2002, BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORY.

Description: The RIKEN BNL Research Center workshop on ''Hadron Structure from Lattice QCD'' was held at BNL during March 11-15, 2002. Hadron structure has been the subject of many theoretical and experimental investigations, with significant success in understanding the building blocks of matter. The nonperturbative nature of QCD, however, has always been an obstacle to deepening our understanding of hadronic physics. Lattice QCD provides the tool to overcome these difficulties and hence a link can be esta… more

An R and D Program for Targetry and Capture at a Neutrino Factory Muon Collider Source.

Description: The need for intense muon beams for muon colliders and for neutrino factories based on muon storage rings leads to a concept of 1-4 MW proton beams incident on a moving target that is inside a 20-T solenoid magnet, with a mercury jet as a preferred example. Novel technical issues for such a system include disruption of the mercury jet by the proton beam and distortion of the jet on entering the solenoid, as well as more conventional issues of materials lifetime and handling of activated materia… more

RFOFO COOLING RING: SIMULATION RESULTS.

Description: Practical cooling rings could lead to lower cost or improved performance in neutrino factory or muon collider designs, The ring modeled here uses realistic 3-dimensional fields and includes such ''real-world'' effects as windows on the absorbers and RF cavities and leaving empty lattice cells for injection and extraction. The ring increases the density of muons in a fixed acceptance volume by a factor of 4.2.

Coldmass for LHC Dipole Insertion Magnets

Description: Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is building a number of magnets for the insertion regions of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This paper presents the magnetic design and the expected field quality in 2-in-1 dipole magnets. A unique feature of this cold mass design is the use of an oblate-shaped yoke. This concept permits a variety of BNL-built magnets to have a similar overall design and allows the LHC main dipole cryostat, post, etc., to be used in these magnets. The proposed oblate-shape… more

Modeling and Measurements of the Duvfel Photoinjector Cavity RF Properties.

Description: The 1.6 cell S-band photoinjector cavity has been in operation at the DUVFEL at BNL for the past year. Initial beam measurements indicated a higher than expected emittance and beam divergence at the exit of the gun. field imbalance in the two cells was suspected, but lack of field probes in the cavity prohibited direct confirmation. A detailed SUPERFISH model was constructed of the cavity assembly. Field balance as a function of cathode plate and tuner position was determined using the model. A… more

Measurements of the Field Quality in Superconducting Dipoles at High Ramp Rates.

Description: Several recent applications of superconducting magnets require the magnets to be operated at high ramp rates and at frequencies of several Hertz. Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) has recently designed and built prototypes of superconducting dipole magnets that can be ramped at a fairly high rate (1 T/s or more). For accelerator applications, it is also crucial that the magnets maintain good field quality even at high ramp rates. In order to characterize the field quality of magnets at high … more

Bnl Very Long Baseline Experiment With a Super Neutrino Beam.

Description: An upgrade to the BNL AGS could produce a very intense proton source at a relatively low cost. This proton source could produce a conventional neutrino beam with a very significant flux at large distances from the laboratory. In this paper we examine the possibility of using this neutrino beam for a very long baseline oscillation experiment where a 500 kiloton water Cherenkov detector is situated at the Homestake mine in South Dakota. We study the physics potential of a high intensity neutrino … more

NEUTRINO FACTORY - IONIZATION COOLING, EMITTANCE EXCHANGE, AND NEUTRINO SUPERBEAM AT BNL?

Description: Muon collider, neutrino factory and I or a neutrino superbeam are interesting and needed to provide a probe for fundamental particle physics. In our collaboration studies we have realized some important issues needed before building a collider (Cost, cooling demonstration, radiation, etc). Muon cooling is a key factor in design of Muon collider, (to a less degree) Muon storage ring, and Neutrino Factory. We present a brief overview on cooling and beam emittance dynamics, and discuss future neut… more

Main installation and services. Final report for DOE Grant No. DE-FG02-96CH10859

Description: Early in 1996 it was reported that groundwater contamination in the form of volatile organic chemicals had been found in several private wells in an area immediately adjacent to the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in Upton, New York. Information released by BNL and their consulting hydrologists indicates that there should be no threat to the Authority's downgradient well fields located in Mastic as a result of said contamination. This is due to the remediation efforts undertaken by BNL at … more

Prospects for measuring K{sup +} {r_arrow} {pi}{sup +} {nu}{bar {nu}} and K{sub L}{sup 0} {r_arrow} {pi}{sup 0} {nu}{bar {nu}} at BNL

Description: Rare kaon decay experiments underway or planned for the BNL AGS will yield new and independent determinations of V*{sub ts}V{sub td}. A measurement of B(K{sub L}{sup 0} {r_arrow} {pi}{sup 0} {nu}{bar {nu}}) allows a determination of the imaginary part of this quantity, which is the fundamental CP-violating parameter of the Standard Model, in a uniquely clean manner. Since the measurement of B(K{sup +} {r_arrow} {pi}{sup +} {nu}{bar {nu}}) determines {vert_bar}V*{sub ts}V{sub td}, a complete der… more
