Efficient computation of matched solutions of the KV envelope equations for periodic focusing lattices.

Description: A new iterative method is developed to numerically calculate the periodic, matched beam envelope solution of the coupled Kapchinskij-Vladimirskij (KV) equations describing the transverse evolution of a beam in a periodic, linear focusing lattice of arbitrary complexity. Implementation of the method is straightforward. It is highly convergent and can be applied to all usual parameterizations of the matched envelope solutions. The method is applicable to all classes of linear focusing lattices wi… more

A Bayesian Approach to Surface X-ray Diffraction

Description: We report on the development of an iterative method to directly invert surface x-ray diffraction (SXRD) data and thereby provide a map of electron density in the near-surface region of a solid. We have termed this method PARADIGM, which stands for Phase and Amplitude Recovery And Diffraction Image Generation Method. Significant advances in the PARADIGM theory were made during the grant period, and experimental milestones have also been achieved. The two components of the research program worked… more

Statistical properties of cellular automata in the context of learning and recognition: Part 1, Introduction

Description: In this lecture the map from a cellular automaton to a sequence of analytical approximations called the local structure theory is described. Connections are drawn between cellular automata and neural network models. It is suggested that the process by which a cellular automaton holds particular probability measures invariant is an appropriate model for biological memory. 20 figs.

Survey of models to predict the effect of geothermal power development on domestic water supplies and to design pollution monitoring networks

Description: The Imperial Valley is a 2,000-km/sup 2/ agricultural region in Southern California with annual crop values of more than $500 million. Geothermal reserves estimated at 130 GWe-yrs were found beneath this Valley. Development of that geothermal energy should occur in the next 10 to 20 years. To ensure that development is carried out in an environmentally sound manner, Lawrence Livermore Laboratory is engaged in a 3-yr study of the environmental effects that development of geothermal power product… more

Spectral Resolution for Five-Element, Filtered, X-Ray Detector (XRD) Arrays Using the Methods of Backus and Gilbert

Description: The generalized method of Backus and Gilbert (BG) is described and applied to the inverse problem of obtaining spectra from a 5-channel, filtered array of x-ray detectors (XRD's). This diagnostic is routinely fielded on the Z facility at Sandia National Laboratories to study soft x-ray photons ({le}2300 eV), emitted by high density Z-pinch plasmas. The BG method defines spectral resolution limits on the system of response functions that are in good agreement with the unfold method currently in … more

Tension in the tie-down chains of a shipping container for hazardous material

Description: Chains are frequently used to tie the shipping containers of hazardous material to a truck bed. The tie-down system is nonlinear when the container is subjected to a triaxial force during transit. It is nonlinear because chains cannot carry compressive force, and the base of the container may partially lift off from the truck bed. A method was developed to calculate the amount of tension in the chains. This methodology includes three assumptions: (1) No friction exists between the container and… more
