Radioiostope studies utilizing a low level whole body counter and clinical application of activation analysis. Progress report

Description: The main emphasis of these studies is the development of methods (hardware and software) for the quantitation of body and specific organ burdens of radioactivity. Current work is directed toward the evaluation of radiation dose distributions in human beings from new radioactive tracers and new procedures used in nuclear medicine. Dosimetry and clinical studies will be carried out on patients using new radiopharmaceuticals where dosimetry data are lacking. Future efforts will be directed toward … more

Budgets and behaviors of uranium and thorium series isotopes in the Santa Monica Basin off the California Coast

Description: Samples from three time-series sediment traps deployed in the Santa Monica Basin off the California coast were analyzed to study the flux and scavenging of uranium and thorium series isotopes. Variations of uranium and thorium series isotopes fluxes in the water column were obtained by integrating these time-series deployment results. Mass and radionuclide fluxes measured from bottom sediment traps compare favorably with fluxed determined from sediment core data. This agreement suggests that th… more

Massively parallel Fokker-Planck calculations epilogue

Description: The purpose of this writeup is to supplement the publication, Massively Parallel Fokker-Planck Calculations,'' which appeared in the Proceedings of the Fifth Distributed Memory Computing Conference. Results obtained subsequent to that presentation are reported. This work is not self-contained; the reader should refer to that publication.

Absolute dipole gamma-ray strength functions for /sup 176/Lu. Supplement

Description: We have derived absolute dipole strength-function information for /sup 176/Lu from an average resonance capture study of /sup 175/Lu with 2-keV neutrons and from neutron capture cross-section measurements with neutrons from 30 keV to about 1 MeV. We found that we needed to increase our previous estimate of the relative M1/E1 strengths near 5 MeV by a factor of 3 and to revise downward the absolute magnitude of our E1 strength function. We accomplished the latter, while still maintaining continu… more

Calculation and interpretation of In-Situ measurements of initial radiations at Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Description: Cobalt activation calculations will be reviewed, and similar comparisons of sulfur activation interior to electrical insulators on power transmission lines will be discussed. The relationship between neutron tissue kermas one to two kilometers from hypocenter and the particular activations of cobalt and sulfur are reviewed. At present, measured and calculated quantities agree within associated uncertainties, which are substantial. Additional work to shrink these uncertainties will be discussed.… more

Ortho-para forms of hydrogen, deuterium, and tritium: radiation and self-induced conversion kinetics and equilibria

Description: The theory of the ortho-para transitions in H/sub 2/, D/sub 2/, and T/sub 2/ is developed. Experimental and calculated values of the ortho-para compositions of the three hydrogen isotopes mentioned in the literature are correlated as a function of temperature, and are discussed critically. The kinetics of the radiation and self-induced ortho-para transitions are reviewed. In general, the radiation-induced transitions are more rapid than the self-induced transitions. We estimate (based on data f… more

Review of monitoring instruments for transuranics in fuel fabrication and reprocessing plants. A progress report to the physical and technological programs, Division of Biomedical and Environmental Research, U. S. Energy Research and Development Administration

Description: A comprehensive review of the monitoring instruments for transuranic elements released from nuclear fuel fabrication and reprocessing plants has been compiled. The extent of routine operational releases has been reviewed for the light water reactor (LWR) fuel cycle (including plutonium recycle), the breeder reactor fuel cycle, and the high-temperature gas cooled reactor (HTGR) fuel cycle. The stack monitoring instrumentation presently in use at the various fabrication and reprocessing plants ar… more

Uncertainties in scientific measurements

Description: Some examples of nuclear data in which the uncertainty has been underestimated, or at least appears to be underestimated, are reviewed. The subjective aspect of the problem of systematic uncertainties is discussed. Historical aspects of the data uncertainty problem are noted. 64 refs., 6 tabs.

Specific activity of the NPR primary coolant loop

Description: In coolant system such as NPR's, the coolant activity level increase with each succeeding pass through the reactor flux until a saturation limit is reached. Therefore, the activity level of the NPR coolant system will be much higher than that of the old reactor once-through systems. This report is the determination of the specific activities (disintegrations/cc{center dot}sec) of the various coolant impurities which determine the total activity of the coolant system. 10 refs., 13 figs., 2 tabs.
