Lasers in chemical processing

Description: The high cost of laser energy is the crucial issue in any potential laser-processing application. It is expensive relative to other forms of energy and to most bulk chemicals. We show those factors that have previously frustrated attempts to find commercially viable laser-induced processes for the production of materials. Having identified the general criteria to be satisfied by an economically successful laser process and shown how these imply the laser-system requirements, we present a status… more

Thermal diffusion development design parameter calculations for a pilot thermal diffusion apparatus. Part 1

Description: Atomic Energy Commission has expressed interest in obtaining xenon with a composite neutron absorption cross section of less than one barn. This material may be obtainable from the off-gas of the Purex dissolver. A proposed gas purification facility would process the Purex off-gas through two distillation steps for isolation of a ``rough`` cut of xenon isotopes containing principally Xe{sup 131}, Xe{sup 132}, Xe{sup 134}, Xe{sup 136}, and a small quantity of krypton. This material would become … more

Tunable lasers in isotope separation, a colorful view of a dye chemist

Description: Some of the problems to be encountered in the large-scale use of dye lasers in an isotope separation plant are discussed. Why should dye lasers be employed. How can dye conversion efficiency be optimized. How can dye photochemical decomposition and hence running costs be minimized and how serious is this effect anyway. What are toxicity problems with the dye. These and similar issues are examined.

Thermal Diffusion Development Design of Experiments

Description: The Facilities Engineering Operation of the Chemical Processing Department prepared a process study scope design of a large thermal diffusion plant for xenon isotope separation. This scoping was done perforce on the basis of calculations made from exclusively theoretical considerations because actual design data are not available. The designers are of the opinion, however, that, such a basis is not adequate to justify the construction of the plant and have, therefore, requested that an appropri… more

Thermal Diffusion Development Design of Main Equipment

Description: This paper presents a scope design of two coaxial type thermal diffusion columns. These experimental columns are proposed to meet the requirements of the research and development program given in Part 2 of this report series. They would rearrange the isotopes of xenon from the Case II product of the Purex Gas Separations Facility to yield a product with a composite neutron absorption cross section of less than one barn. The theoretical basis for the design is given in Part 1. The auxiliary equi… more

RADIATION STABILITY OF NAFION MEMBRANES USED FOR ISOTOPE SEPARATION BY PROTON EXCHANGE MEMBRANE ELECTROLYSIS

Description: Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolyzers have potential interest for use for hydrogen isotope separation from water. In order for PEME to be fully utilized, more information is needed on the stability of Nafion when exposed to radiation. This work examines Nafion 117 under varying exposure conditions, including dose rate, total dosage and atmospheric condition. Analytical tools, such as FT-IR, ion exchange capacity, DMA and TIC-TOC were used to characterize the exposed membranes. Analysis of the … more

Characterization of Post-Cleaning Solids Samples from the 2H Evaporator Pot

Description: Samples retrieved from the 2H Evaporator Pot in October of 2003 were of a similar nature as previous materials. The bulk of the sample was comprised of a sodium aluminosilicate phase, cancrinite. The concentration of uranium in the evaporator solids, however, was very low:less than 0.1 percentage weight. The uranium enrichment was depleted as expected and measured 0.6 percent. These data agree with uranium contents generated during experimental testing. Additionally, the overall specific radionu… more

Nuclear Proliferation Using Laser Isotope Separation -- Verification Options

Description: Two levels of nonproliferation verification exist. Signatories of the basic agreements under the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) agree to open their nuclear sites to inspection by the IAEA. A more detailed and intrusive level was developed following the determination that Iraq had begun a nuclear weapons development program that was not detected by the original level of verification methods. This level, referred to as 93+2 and detailed in model protocol INFCIRC/540, allows the IAEA to do… more
