Integrated dry NO sub x /SO sub 2 emissions control system

Description: This project's goal is to demonstrate the removal up to 70% of the NO{sub x} and 70% of the SO{sub 2} emissions from coal fired utility boilers. It will establish an alternative emissions control technology integrating a combination of several processes, while minimizing capital expenditures and limiting waste production to dry solids that are handled with conventional ash removal equipment. These processes include low-NO{sub x} burners, NO{sub x} ports and urea injection for NO{sub x} control,… more

Evaluation of a precipitation-ion exchange process for treatment of laundry waste

Description: Bench-scale pilot plant studies were conducted to evaluate chemical coagulation and ion exchange for decontamination of 2724-W laundry wastewater. Chemical coagulation is accomplished at pH 11 to avoid complexant problems and assure good transuranic radionuclide removals. Clinoptilolite is used to remove cesium and strontium. Results of the pilot plant studies are summarized as follows: Decontamination factors of 70 (strontium) and more than 100 (cesium) were achieved by chemical coagulation an… more

Phase relations in crystalline ceramic nuclear waste forms the system UO/sub 2 + x/-CeO/sub 2/-ZrO/sub 2/-ThO/sub 2/ at 1200/sup 0/C in air

Description: Steady-state phase relations in the system UO/sub 2 + x/-CeO/sub 2/-ZrO/sub 2/-ThO/sub 2/ were determined for application to phase relations in the high-level crystalline ceramic nuclear waste form Supercalcine-Ceramics. Samples were treated at 1200/sup 0/C at an oxygen partial pressure of 0.21 atm and a total pressure of 1 atm. Phase assemblages were found to be composed of cubic solid solutions of the flourite structure type, solid solutions based on ZrO/sub 2/, and orthorhombic solid solutio… more

Confined zone dispersion flue gas desulfurization demonstration

Description: This is the sixth quarterly report for this project and it covers work performed on Phase 3a of the project from February 1, 1992 through April 30, 1992. Extension of the parametric test period through June 1992 provides an opportunity to regain most of the schedule slippage, but only if the modifications needed for continuous operation of the CZD system are installed concurrent with the extended test period. These modifications include automation of the lime preparation and transfer system, au… more

Steam Gasification of Carbon: Catalyst Properties

Description: The objectives of this research are to determine the catalyst composition and concentration for metal oxide (potassium and calcium oxides) catalyzed gasification of carbon. The scope of this research involves determining: the concentration of active catalytic sites (and thus the dispersion), at reaction conditions, as a function of temperature, carbon burnoff, catalyst loading, and catalyst type; the location of catalyst, on the surface, on an atomic scale; catalyst composition; the site-specif… more

Hazards control progress report No. 53, July--December 1976

Description: Continued construction of the realistic phantom for calibration of transuranic isotope lung counters is discussed. Current work includes final shaping of the torso cast, development of a technique for making foamed plastic lungs loaded with transuranic isotopes, casting of tissue-equivalent (T.E.) organs, and acquisition of rib cages for the second and third phantoms.

Enhancing the use of coals by gas reburning-sorbent injection. Quarterly report No. 24, July 1--September 30, 1993

Description: The objective of this project is to evaluate and demonstrate a cost effective emission control technology for acid rain precursors, oxides of nitrogen (NO{sub x}) and sulfur (SO{sub x}), on two coal fired utility boilers in Illinois. The units selected are representative of pre-NSPS design practices: tangential and cyclone fired. The specific objectives are to demonstrate reductions of 60 percent in NO{sub x} and 50 percent in SO{sub x} emissions, by a combination of two developed technologies,… more
