Kilowatt isotope power system. Phase II plan. Volume V. Safety, quality assurance and reliability

Description: The development of a Kilowatt Isotope Power System (KIPS) was begun in 1975 for the purpose of satisfying the power requirements of satellites in the 1980's. The KIPS is a /sup 238/PuO/sub 2/-fueled organic Rankine cycle turbine power system to provide a design output of 500 to 2000 W. Included in this volume are: launch and flight safety considerations; quality assurance techniques and procedures to be followed through system fabrication, assembly and inspection; and the reliability program ma… more

Kilowatt isotope power system. Phase II plan. Volume I. Phase II program plan

Phase II of the overall 3-phase KIPS program is described. This volume presents a program plan for qualifying the organic Rankine power system for flight test in 1982. The program plan calls for the design and fa… more

The alleged 231-Z discharge of plutonium to the 216-Z-19 Ditch, February 1977

Description: This report describes circumstances involved in the alleged 91.2 grams of plutonium released to the 216-Z-19 Ditch from the 231-Z facility. The following areas were reviewed: 231-Z liquid waste data collected by Battelle-Northwest and Rockwell Hanford Operations (Rockwell); the sampling methods used by Battelle and Rockwell; and operating conditions in the 231-Z and 234-5Z Buildings at the time of the alleged release.

Energy and protein production from pulp mill wastes

Description: Research efforts during the past quarter have centered on increasing yeast protein production using ozonated spent sulfite liquor (SSL) and improving the biodegradability of SSL by ultrasonic treatments. Continuous-flow fermentation experiments demonstrated the suitability of ozonated SSL as a substrate for Torula yeast growth. Yeast yields averaging between 2.0--2.2 g/l of SSL were obtained at the optimum retention time of 1.8 days. This contrasts to yeast production rates of 4.8--5.0 g/l of S… more

MACK/MACKLIB System for Nuclear Response Functions

Description: The MACK computer program calculates energy pointwise and multigroup nuclear response functions from basic nuclear data in ENDF/B format. The new version of the program MACK-IV, incorporates major developments and improvements aimed at maximizing the utilization of available nuclear data and ensuring energy conservation in nuclear heating calculations. A new library, MACKLIB-IV, of nuclear response functions was generated in the CTR energy group structure of 171 neutron groups and 36 gamma grou… more

Development of a Practical Photochemical Energy Storage System Annual Report, June 15, 1977-June 14, 1978

Description: Significant progress has been made in several areas over the past year. Quantitative measurements evaluating organic sensitizers and ctalysts have been carried out. An exciting new transition metal senitizer has been discovered. A comprehensive evaluation of the characteristics of polystyrene based heterogeneous sensitizers and catalysts has been made. Recently we have successfully synthesized the first glass functionalized photosensitizers. This new class of heterogeneous supports offers sever… more

Kilowatt Isotope Power System, Phase II plan. Appendix A to Volume II and Volume III: KIPS jet condenser math model

Description: The analytical model of the condensation process occurring in a jet condenser that was developed during Phase I of the Kilowatt Isotope Power System Program (KIPS) at Sunstrand Corporation is documented. The analytical model is based on one dimensional gas dynamics in the vapor funnel, a kinetic theory approach to the vapor/liquid interface condensing process and an empirical correlation of the intrajet heat transfer coefficient (from the vapor/liquid interface to the bulk liquid in the jet). T… more
