[Student decorated cookies]

Description: Photograph of a student made cookie creation. On a plate are three cookies, two chocolate and one plain, that have been decorated using icing and candies. The cookies were arranged into a Mickey Mouse shape. A student is taking a photo of the cookies with their phone.

[Creators with If You Give a Pig a Pancake piece]

Description: Photograph of creation team (L-R) Jessica Phillips, Emily Aparicio and an unidentified member with their If You Give a Pig a Pancake piece. It was made for the annual Edible Books Festival held in Willis Library. The team made a platter that looks like maple syrup and put a little pig figurine on top of a stack of pancakes. The words "IF YOU GIVE A PIG A PANCAKE" are around the platter edge.

[Reading Rainbow Edible Book]

Description: Photograph of a Reading Rainbow Edible Book that was made using cupcakes, cookies, Skittles, marshmallows and gummy bears. The cupcakes are arranged into a rainbow and its sitting on a green platter. On the cookies are the words "Reading Rainbow" and the 'o' is made with Skittles. The creation was made for the annual Edible Books Festival in Willis Library.

RLPORINC: the RELAP4/MOD5 interface to ORINC

Description: The Oak Ridge Inverse code, ORINC, calculates the temperature distribution in an electric core pin from internal temperatures and the conditions in the surrounding environment. While the internal temperatures can be obtained from thermocouples in the Thermal Hydraulic Test Facility, the needed environmental conditions cannot be determined as directly from experimental data. However, this information can be determined from a modified version of the Reactor Linearized Analysis Program, RELAP. In … more

System for producing a uniform rubble bed for in-situ processes

Description: A method and a cutter are disclosed for producing a large cavity filled with a uniform bed of rubblized oil shale or other material, for in-situ processing. A raise drill head has a hollow body with a generally circular base and sloping upper surface. A hollow shaft extends from the hollow body. Cutter teeth are mounted on the upper surface of the body and relatively small holes are formed in the body between the cutter teeth. Relatively large peripheral flutes around the body allow material to… more

Upgrade of the Proton West secondary beamline

Description: As originally designed and operated, protons entering PW6 were steered by a series of EPB dipoles into a single interaction length beryllium target, some 43 feet from the enclosure wall. Ensuing secondary beams, either p{sup +}/{pi}{sup +} or p{sup -}/{pi}{sup -}, were collected by a string of quadrupoles following the target, steered westward, away from the Proton Center line, through PW6 and PW7, and ultimately focussed on experiment production targets located within the large PW8 hall. Aroun… more

Analytical model for the dynamic resistivity of electrically-exploded conductors

Description: A detailed model for the dynamic resistivity of an exploding conductor presents many difficulties. An electrically-exploded conductor undergoes significant hydrodynamic expansion as it is heated. Resistivity is a function of both the temperature and density of a conductor and realistic models for resistivity over the range of parameter space experienced by an exploding conductor are quite complex. See for example, the model of Lee and More (1984). Calculation of the hydrodynamic expansion of th… more

TWO AUXILIARY CODES FOR USE WITH RENUPAK

Description: Two IBM-7090 codes were written to aid the user of the neutron moments method code RENUPAK. One code computes and punches response function input cards for RENUPAK or NIOBE (another neutron transport code). The second code reads RENUPAK flux tapes and prints out a compact edit including dose rate as a function of distance. (auth)

Heavy recycle solvent studies in two-stage coal liquefaction. Final technical report, September 1, 1982-December 30, 1983

Description: The objective of this program has been to study the chemistry of the components with high boiling points in a direct coal liquefaction recycle solvent and to identify those components which lead to higher overall yields and improved product stability in the initial coal dissolution step of direct coal liquefaction processes. The major conclusions are: -454 C recycle solvent is primarily aromatic hydrocarbons (73%) and contains almost no asphaltenes; +454 C recycle solvent is primarily asphalten… more

Dosimetry measurements external to a 10 kiloliter liquid-air vessel containing a D-T neutron source. [14 MeV neutrons]

Description: To determine the radiation attenuation characteristics of liquid air (109 g/cm/sup 2/ thick) for 14 MeV neutrons from a central D-T source in a 10 kL vessel, radiation dose measurements were made using a large tissue-equivalent ion chamber external to the vessel. The shielding characteristics of steel spherical shells were also investigated. Experimental results were analyzed and compared with TARTNP Monte Carlo code calculations. Degradation of the ion chamber's response to high-energy neutron… more

A Method of Determining the Intermediate Energy Neutron Dose

Description: The intermediate energy neutron flux existing outside the biological shielding of reactors has not been studied to any great extent previous to this time, because of the lack of an instrument capable of detecting neutrons in the intermediate energy range. The instrument used at the MTR utilizes polyethylene spheres of various sizes to give different amounts of moderation and absorption to the impinging neutrons. A procedure for the approximate determination of the relative number of intermediat… more

Experimental observations and model calculations of impurity radiation in a plasma gun compact torus experiment

Description: Several types of radiation measurements were performed on the Beta II compact forms experiment. Among these are time integrated spectra ranging in wavelength from the vuv to the uv, time resolved bolometer measurements of radiation from the x-ray to the infrared, and time and wavelength resolved measurements of certain spectral lines. It is difficult to relate any one of these measurements to plasma parameters of interest such as temperature, density, or impurity content. In this report we comp… more
