Americium purification by a combined anion exchange and bidentate organophosphorus solvent extraction process. [Patent application]

Description: Americium is separated from mixtures containing plutonium, other actinides, and other non-lanthamide impurities, by a combined process of anion exchange resin sorption to remove plutonium, and a bidentate organophosphorus solvent extraction of americium of the anion exchange resin effluent. Dihexyl-N,N-diethylcarbamylmethylenephosphonate is a preferred solvent. The initial mixture may be subjected to a cation exchange operation to remove monovalent impurities. The process is especially effectiv… more

Pyrolysis and gasification of coal at high temperatures

Description: The macropore structure of chars is a major factor in determining their reactivity during the gasification stage. The major objectives of this contract were to (a) quantify by direct measurements the effect of pyrolysis conditions of the macropore structure, and (b) establish how the macropores affected the reactivity pattern, the ignition behavior and the fragmentation of the char particles during gasification in the regime of strong diffusional limitations. Results from this project provide m… more

Description: Research on the use of cements in radioactive waste isolation is reported. Other research is reported on the effects of thermal treatments of clays and shales on their cation exchange capacities and relative sorptive properties for cations. Development of instrumentation for measuring thermal properties of cements at atmospheric pressure was completed. A method was developed for measuring heat flow in shales and cement. Data on thermodynamic properties of cements and shales are included. Studie… more

Measurement control for plutonium isotopic measurements using gamma-ray spectrometry

Description: A measurement control (MC) program should be an integral part of every nondestructive assay measurement system used for the assay of special nuclear materials. This report describes an MC program for plutonium isotopic composition measurements using high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy. This MC program emphasizes the standardization of data collection procedures along with the implementation of internal and external measurement control checks to provide the requisite measurement quality assur… more

Cytometric analysis of shape and DNA content in mammalian sperm

Description: Male germ cells respond dramatically to a variety of insults and are important reproductive dosimeters. Semen analyses are very useful in studies on the effects of drugs, chemicals, and environmental hazards on testicular function, male fertility and heritable germinal mutations. Sperm were analyzed by flow cytometry and slit-scan flow analysis for injury following the exposure of testes to mutagens. The utility of flow cytometry in genotoxin screening and monitoring of occupational exposure wa… more

GAMIDEN: a program to aid in the identification of unknown materials by gamma-ray spectroscopy

Description: The intent of the computer code GAMIDEN is to help identify isotopes by their gamma-ray emissions and thus to assist in the nondestructive assay of unknown materials. From both radioactive decays and neutron captures, GAMIDEN searches GAMTOT83, a file of gamma-ray spectra, for matches with observed photon energies. This report describes the search procedure, outlines the use of the code, and gives an example. The code is designed to operate on the CRAY 1 computer at Lawrence Livermore National … more

Reactivity of young chars via energetic distribution measurements

Description: We have developed what we believe to be the very first a priori prediction technique for the gasification reactivity of coal char. With this method the gasification reactivity of a coal char as function of temperature can be predicted from a single temperature programmed desorption (TPD) experiment following mild gasification at a single temperature (Calo et al., 1989; Hall and Calo, 1990a). This approach has been demonstrated for C0{sub 2} gasification of coal chars where the gasification reac… more

Quality engineering and control semiannual progress report, November--December 1977 and January--April 1978

Description: Determination of ppM concentrations of dibutyl phosphate in aqueous solutions of nitric acid or sodium carbonate is possible after an extraction step with carbon tetrachloride. Ester cleavage of the fatty triglyceride constituents is the principal radiolytic reaction in irradiation of a dolphin-head oil base precision watch oil. Use of a special container and a vacuum-brazing furnace permits the high-temperature dynamic determination of volatile surface contamination from samples of large geome… more

Characterization of hazardous constituents in HLW supernate and implications for solid LLW generation

Description: High Level Waste (HLW) generated during Separations processing in the F- and H-Canyons is transferred to the Tank Farms for stage in 51 underground, million gallon storage tanks. The waste is an aqueous solution containing dissolved sodium salts and insoluble metal oxides/hydroxides. The waste solution is evaporated to reduce the volume, and the resulting saltcake and residual supernate are stored. Over the 40 year history of the Tank Farm, routine supernate sampling has been conducted in suppo… more

Investigation into the dissolution and direct assay of high-fired plutonium dioxide. [Fusion-melt with potassium pyrosulfate and sodium peroxide]

Description: A fusion-melt and dissolution assay method has been developed and tested for the quantitative analysis of high-fired plutonium dioxide. The method employs fusion of the plutonium dioxide at temperatures greater than the melting point of an eutectic mixture of potassium pyrosulfate plus sodium peroxide. The resultant melt is then titrated directly by either controlled potential coulometry or a gravimetric titration, using standardized ceric sulfate as the titrant. It has been concluded from thes… more

An anion exchange-precipitation procedure for the determination of Na{sup 24} in reactor effluent water

Description: The isotope Na{sup 24} is one of the major short half-life constituents of reactor effluent water. It has a half-life of 15 hours and decays of emission of a 1.39 MeV maximum beta particle. Other radioisotopes present in reactor effluent water from which Na{sup 24} must be separated are Si{sup 31}, P{sup 32}, Mn{sup 56}, Cu{sup 64}, As{sup 76}, Sr{sup 91--92}, Ba{sup 139--140} and rare earths. This report describes a rapid and very simple method for the quantitative determination of Na{sup 24} … more

Technical bases DWPF Late Washing Facility

Description: A task force recommended that the technical feasibility of a Late Wash' facility be assessed [1]. In this facility, each batch of tetraphenylborate slurry from Tank 49 would be given a final wash to reduce the concentrations of nitrite and radiolysis products to acceptable levels. Laboratory-scale studies have demonstrated that d the nitrite content of the slurry fed to DWPF is reduced to 0.01 M or less (and at least a 4X reduction in concentration of the soluble species is attained), (1) the n… more

Development and evaluation of high resolution quadrupole mass analyzer and an inductively coupled plasma-Mach disk

Description: By definition a plasma is an electrically conducting gaseous mixture containing a significant concentration of cations and electrons. The Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) is an electrodeless discharge in a gas at atmospheric pressure. This discharge is an excellent one for vaporizing, atomizing, and ionizing elements. The early development of the ICP began in 1942 by Babat and then by Reed in the early 1960s. This was then followed by the pioneering work of Fassel and coworkers in the late 1960… more

Plutonium analysis in spiked bovine tissues: an interlaboratory study

Description: One of the more useful tools to assure the reliability of results from analytical procedures is the interlaboratory comparison method. The present exercise was undertaken primarily to obtain a measure of the reliability of analyses performed by several laboratories on autopsy samples in support of the United States Transuranium Registry (USTR). The results of these and other leading laboratories which routinely conduct similar analyses will be presented and compared. Three types of bovine tissu… more
