NEUTRON FLUX AND Cd RATIO MEASUREMENTS IN THE HN-1 BEAM HOLE FOR THREE FUEL LOADINGS OF THE OAK RIDGE RESEARCH REACTOR

Description: Neutron flux measurements were made in the Oak Ridge Research Reactor beam hole HN-l shield plug. at low reactor power (N/sub L/) with three fuel configurations. The purpose of these tests was to determine the most favorable fuel arrangement in the region of the experimental hole in order to permit minimization of exposure time of an in-pile slurry loop experiment using pure thoria. It was found that the perturbed thermal neutron flux decreased by factors of 2, each 1.4 in., at the forward end … more

14-MeV Neutron Generator Used as a Thermal Neutron Source

Description: One of the most important applications of the general purpose Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNPS and MCNPX) codes is neutron shielding design. We employed this method to simulate the shield of a 14-MeV neutron generator used as a thermal neutron source providing an external thermal neutron beam for testing large area neutron detectors developed for diffraction studies in biology and also useful for national security applications. Nuclear reactors have been the main sources of neutrons used for scien… more

HIGH ENERGY HADRON POLARIMETRY.

Description: Proton polarimetry at RHIC uses the interference of electromagnetic (EM) and hadronic scattering amplitudes. The EM spin-flip amplitude for protons is responsible for the proton's anomalous magnetic moment, and is large. This then generates a significant analyzing power for small angle elastic scattering. RHIC polarimetry has reached a 5% uncertainty on the beam polarization, and seem capable of reducing this uncertainty further. Polarized neutron beams ax also interesting for RHIC and for a po… more

Prospects for Acceleration of Deuterons and Helions.

Description: In order to study the spin structure of the neutron at high energy, a beam rich in polarized neutrons needs to be developed. The neutron has no charge and cannot be accelerated, so either deuterons or helions must be considered. When it comes to spin manipulation and stability of the polarization in a circular accelerator, it is the anomalous part of the magnetic moment which is important. If the anomaly is too small, then manipulation becomes difficult as in the case of deuterons--spin rotator… more

PROTON RECOIL ENERGY LOSS DISTRIBUTION IN PLANE GEOMETRY

Description: Computations of proton recoil energy losses from neutron irradiation of hydrogenous systems possessing plane symmetry were made for the purpose of fast neutron counter design. A digital computer code was written to carry out the calculations for two irradiation geometries: the neutron beam is assumed to be normally incident upon the system, and the system is exposed to an isotropic flux of neutrons. Numerical results are presented for neutrons of various energies incident on plane radiators of … more
