Tritium release from a nonevaportable getter-pump cartridge exposed to moist air at ambient temperature

Description: The amount of tritium released when a commercially available getter-pump cartridge was exposed to moist air at ambient temperatures was measured. The cartridge consisted of Zr-Al powder pressed onto an iron substrate, which is the type of cartridge proposed for use in the Tokomak Fusion Test Reactor. While the initial release of tritium was rapid the total activity released was lss than 0.005% of the cartridge loading. Of this amount, at least 80% was released as tritiated water. 8 figures.

Lithium-aluminum separations request

Description: A test irradiation of lithium was recently completed in one of the Hanford K Reactors. It is requested that these lithium-aluminum alloy targets be separated and analyzed for tritium content. This request is for the analysis to be performed on two groups or batches of samples. The first group would be 38 elements with a total gas content estimated to be approximately 97 liters. The second batch would consist of 76 elements with a total gas content estimated to be approximately 193 liters. This … more

Hanford Atomic Products Department: Monthly report, April 1967

Description: During April the N-Reactor operated with a time operated efficiency of 70.8%; and a production availability and steam availability to Washington Public Power Supply System of 68.5%. No fuel element failures occurred. A scheduled outage (April 18 to 25) was used to complete planned maintenance, accomplish the modifications required for the 4,800 Mw power level probe, and for charging the fourth increment of the coproduct demonstration load. Fuel element input production was 100% of forecast. Out… more

Cross-Roll Flow Forming of ODS Alloy Heat Exchanger Tubes For Hoop Creep Enhancement, Quarterly Technical Progress Report: October-December 2005

Description: Mechanically alloyed oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) Fe-Cr-Al alloy thin walled tubes and sheets, produced via powder processing and consolidation methodologies, are promising materials for eventual use at temperatures up to 1200 C in the power generation industry, far above the temperature capabilities of conventional alloys. Target end-uses range from gas turbine combustor liners to high aspect ratio (L/D) heat exchanger tubes. Grain boundary creep processes at service temperatures, parti… more

Finite element modeling of the effect of interface anomalies on thermal stresses in alumina scales.

Description: The scales that grow from oxidation often develop a convoluted morphology or interface pores. High thermal stresses can develop locally and are potentially detrimental to the scale or interface integrity. Finite element simulations are used to examine residual thermal stresses and strains that result when these deviations from a flat interface have formed, and the resulting geometry is subsequently cooled to room temperature. A variety of geometries will be considered for alumina scales on a Fe… more

COMMENT ON TRITIUM ABSORPTION-DESORPTION CHARACTERISTICS OF LANI4.25AL0.75

Description: The thermodynamic data for LaNi{sub 4.25}Al{sub 0.75} tritide, reported by Wang et al. (W.-d. Wang et al., J. Alloys Compd. (2006) doi:10.1016/j.jallcom.206.09.122), are in variance with our published data. The plateau pressures for the P-C-T isotherms at all temperatures are significantly lower than published data. As a result, the derived thermodynamic parameters, {Delta}H{sup o} and {Delta}S{sup o}, are questionable. Using the thermodynamic parameters derived from the data reported by Wang e… more

Spray forming metallic support bands on ceramic elements

Description: A study was conducted to assess the feasibility of spray depositing a metal ring on the end of ceramic tubes using a low temperature spray forming process developed at the INEL. 1/16 in.--1.8 in. thick x 1/2 in. wide tin, zinc, and aluminum alloy rings were spray formed using a bench-scale nozzle without damaging the ceramic. Analysis of the deposits indicated that they were suitably dense and exhibited good adherence to the ceramic material.

NMR and NQR study of the thermodynamically stable quasicrystals

Description: {sup 27}Al and {sup 61,65}Cu NMR measurements are reported for powder samples of stable AlCuFe and AlCuRu icosahedral quasicrystals and their crystalline approximants, and for a AlPdMn single grain quasicrystal. Furthermore, {sup 27}Al NQR spectra at 4.2 K have been observed in the AlCuFe and AlCuRu samples. From the quadrupole perturbed NMR spectra at different magnetic fields, and from the zero field NQR spectra, a wide distribution of local electric field gradient (EFG) tensor components and… more
