Separations areas effluent treatment: The preparation of a simulated effluent for system development and testing

Description: A fundamental parameter in the design of the Effluent Treatment Facility (ETF), the effluent composition, has recently been investigated by analyzing samples from both separations areas. As a result of this characterization program, we can now project the composition of the ETF feed stream. The anticipated feed composition is presented here for the purpose of making system projections; and a formula is provided for a simulant to use in testing evaporation, filtration, and reverse osmosis (RO) e… more

EFFECT ON 105KW NORTH WALL DUE TO ADDITION OF FILTRATION SYSTEM

Description: CHPRC D&D Projects is adding three filtration system on two 1-ft concrete pads adjacent to the north side of existing KW Basin building. This analysis is prepared to provide qualitative assessment based on the review of design information available for 105KW basin substructure. In the proposed heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) filtration pad designs a 2 ft gap will be maintained between the pads and the north end of the existing 1 05KW -Basin building. Filtration Skids No.2 a… more

Investigation of Neptunium Precipitator Cleanout Options

Description: Oxalate precipitation followed by filtration is used to prepare plutonium oxalate. Historically, plutonium oxalate has tended to accumulate in the precipitation tanks. These solids are periodically removed by flushing with concentrated (64 percent) nitric acid. The same precipitation tanks will now be used in the processing of neptunium. Literature values indicate that neptunium oxalate may not be as soluble as plutonium oxalate in nitric acid. Although a wide variety of options is available to… more

Evaluation of extractant-coated ferromagnetic microparticles for the recovery of hazardous metals from waste solution.

Description: A magnetically assisted chemical separation (MACS) process was developed earlier at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). This compact process was designed for the separation of transuranics (TRU) and radionuclides from the liquid waste streams that exist at many DOE sites, with an overall reduction in waste volume requiring disposal. The MACS process combines the selectivity afforded by solvent extractant/ion exchange materials with magnetic separation to provide an efficient chemical separation.… more

Continuous concentration and constant volume washing of tetraphenylborate slurries

Description: SRTC has completed filtration testing of tetraphenylborate (TPB) slurries with and without sludge. These tests were slightly different from previous SRS tests in that they used continuous mode concentration and constant volume washing evolutions. The extent of TPB recovery during washing was measured. The resulting washed precipitate slurry, with sludge, was stored at ambient temperature and under a nitrogen-inerted atmosphere to study TPB stability. Samples of both unwashed and washed slurries… more
