Hazards Report for SM-1 Core II Without the SM-1 Core I High Burnup Elements and With the PM-1-M-2 Element

Description: Abstract: The removal of both SM-1 Core I high burnup elements from SM-1 Core II and the insertion of the PM-1-M-2 element and the SM-1 Core I spare element in SM-1 Core II is discussed. Nuclear and thermal characteristics of Core II with these changes are presented and conclusions related to the changes in the hazard potential are made. If the core change indicated by this report is made, local peaking factors will be decreased and burnout ratios will be increased. This, of course, in itself… more

Exceeding always-safe ratio in F-2 and F-1 tanks: Number 2, CY-63

Description: The always critically-safe ratio of plutonium to enriched uranium was exceeded in the F-2 and V-1 vessels on June 6, 1963. The allowable always-safe ratio at the time of the incident vas 627 grams per ton. The actual ratio achieved vas 673 grams per ton. This report details the investigation into events leading to the over-batch.

Long range plan - Plowshare excavation program (Book 1 - 1966/1967 excavation program binder)

Description: The purpose of this report is to present a proposed five-year program for the Plowshare Excavation Program. In preparing this study we proceed as follows: (a) Review the significant advances (since 1963) in nuclear excavation technology, and (b) identify the key uncertainties in that technology. After completing these two steps, we then proceed to identify key experiments and any new measurements that may be required to increase our predictive capability and/or to resolve the major uncertaintie… more

PRODUCTION OF S = 0, -1 RESONANT STATES IN K- p INTERACTIONS AT 2.45 GeV/c

Description: About 70,000 pictures of 2.45-GeV/c K{sup -}-p interactions have been obtained in the present 72-inch hydrogen bubble-chamber experiment. Approximately 24,000 events of all topologies except 1-, 2-, and 3-prong events have been measured, and 50% have been remeasured. They report here on a study of the production of known resonances in the reactions: (1) K{sup -} + p {yields} {Lambda} + {pi}{sup +} + {pi}{sup -}; (2) K{sup -} + p {yields} {Lambda} + {pi}{sup +} + {pi}{sup 0} + {pi}{sup -}. Plant Fructose-1,6-Diphosphatases

Description: Several important metabolic processes in plants involve the conversion of triose phosphate to hexose monophosphate. These include the synthesis of carbohydrates from precursors such as pyruvate and acetyl-coenzyme A, the reductive pentose phosphate cycle of photosynthesis, and the oxidative pentose phosphate cycle. This conversion cannot be accomplished solely by glycolytic enzymes because of the irreversible nature of phosphofructokinase. Racker and Schroeder (1958) have suggested two possible… more

Irradiation summary report: PT-IP-247-A-FP irradiation of 1.47% enriched self-supported I&E fuel elements in ribless process tubes

Description: The objective of this test was to irradiate self-supported fuel elements under conditions of severity comparable to those expected for future loadings of this geometry. From this irradiation an attempt was made to determine the resistance to corrosion of cooled cladding, the effect of supports on cladding corrosion and coolant flow patterns, resistance of ``hot-spot`` type of attack, and rupture resistance of projection fuel elements. These results are compared to rib supported control elements… more

The Boron-Carbon System: Final Technical Report, May 1, 1960 - April 30, 1961

Description: Abstract: The boron-carbon equilibrium diagram has been determined by X-ray, metallographic, and thermal analysis of sintered and arc-cast alloys. A single carbide having a range of solubility from approximately 9 to 20 a/o carbon and melting congruently exists in the system. The terminal solubility of carbon in boron is 0.1-0.2a/o. The freezing reaction at the composition and melting temperature of elemental boron; there is a eutectic reaction at 29a/o carbon and 2375 degrees Celcius. No allot… more

Nuclear Superheat Project Fabrication, Irradiation and Evaluation of Superheat Fuel Element SH-1 and SH-2

Description: The fabrication, irradiation and evaluation of the first two superheat fuel assemblies is described in detail. Experimental data indicate that, in general, the nuclear superheat fuel elements have performed satisfactorily under the testing conditions used. Certain problem areas which will influence future fuel element designs have been defined.
