Analytical and experimental heat transfer and flow-field prediction on a rectangular reentry module

Description: A General Purpose Heat Source (GPHS) has been designed for the purpose of supplying power to a radioisotope thermal generator intended for interplanetary missions. The baseline configuration, nominally 2 in. x 4 in. x 4 in. with sharp edges and corners, is required to survive accidental earth reentry as well as terminal impact velocities. Several problems have been identified relative to survival criteria during reentry. This paper is concerned with the flow field and reentry heating for a broa… more

TMX-Upgrade neutral-beam injection system

Description: The TMX experiment proved that axial confinement of central-cell ions is improved ninefold by the electrostatic potential of end-cell plasmas. The TMX Upgrade task is to improve this confinement further. This paper discusses the injector system aspects of the TMX Upgrade.

Magnets for the Mirror Fusion Test Facility: testing of the first Yin-Yang and the design and development of other magnets

Description: Completed in May 1981, the first Yin-Yang magnet for the tandem Mirror Fusion Test Facility (MFTF-B) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) was successfully tested in February 1982 to its full design field (7.68 T) and current (5775 A). Since that time, the entire magnet array has been reconfigured - from the original A-cell to an axicell design. The MFTF-B magnet array now contains a total of 26 large superconducting coils: 2 sets of yin-yang pairs, 2 sets of transition magnets (each… more

Chloromethyl chlorosulfate as a voltage delay inhibitor in lithium cells

Description: Chloromethyl chlorosulfate (CMCS) is used as a passive film growth inhibitor in electrochemical cells to minimize voltage delay and low-voltage discharge. Film growth on lithium anodes is significantly diminished when CMCS is added to SOCl{sub 2} and SO{sub 2}Cl{sub 2} electrolytes of lithium batteries. The CMCS also has the effect of extending the shelf-life of Li/SOCl{sub 2} and Li/SO{sub 2}Cl{sub 2} batteries.

Technical evaluation of the adequacy of station electric distribution system voltages for the R. E. Ginna Nuclear Power Station, Unit 1: selected issues program (Docket No. 50-244)

Description: This report documents the technical evaluation of the adequacy of the station electric distribution system voltages for the R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Station, Unit 1. The evaluation is to determine if the onsite distribution system, in conjunction with the offsite power sources, has sufficient capacity to automatically start and operate all Class 1E loads within the equipment voltage ratings under certain conditions established by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The analysis submitted demonst… more

Design & Fabrication of a High-Voltage Photovoltaic Cell

Description: Silicon photovoltaic (PV) cells are alternative energy sources that are important in sustainable power generation. Currently, applications of PV cells are limited by the low output voltage and somewhat low efficiency of such devices. In light of this fact, this project investigates the possibility of fabricating high-voltage PV cells on float-zone silicon wafers having output voltages ranging from 50 V to 2000 V. Three designs with different geometries of diffusion layers were simulated and com… more

Status of the Control System on the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX)

Description: In 2003, the NSTX plasma control system was used for plasma shape control using real-time equilibrium reconstruction (using the rtEFIT code - J. Ferron, et al., Nucl. Fusion 38 1055 (1998)). rtEFIT is now in routine use for plasma boundary control [D. A. Gates, et al., submitted to Nuclear Fusion (2005)]. More recently, the system has been upgraded to support feedback control of the resistive wall mode (RWM). This paper describes the hardware and software improvements that were made in support … more

National Spherical Torus Experiment Real Time Plasma Control Data Acquisition Hardware

Description: The National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) is currently providing researchers data on low aspect-ratio toroidal plasmas. NSTX's Plasma Control System adjusts the firing angles of thyristor rectifier power supplies, in real time, to control plasma position, shape and density. A Data Acquisition system comprised of off-the-shelf and custom hardware provides the magnetic diagnostics data required in calculating firing angles. This VERSAmodule Eurocard (VME) bus-based system utilizes Front Pane… more

MANAGING SYSTEM PARAMETERS FOR SNS MAGNETS AND POWER SUPPLIES.

Description: The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), currently under construction at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is a collaborative effort between six US Department of Energy partner laboratories. Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is responsible for the Ring and Transport Lines requiring 312 magnets and 251 power supplies. The challenge is to maintain a closed communication loop among stakeholders for the variable parameters integral to these two major systems. This paper provides an overview of the organization … more

TRACKING TESTS FOR THE SNS FAST INJECTION BUMP POWER SUPPLY

Description: The tracking requirement of the SNS Fast Injection Bump power supplies is described. In addition to the usual tracking between the load current and the input reference of a power supply, these power supplies must also track between pairs of units under slightly different loads. This paper describes the use of a current-null test to measure tracking performances. For the actual tests, a single dummy magnet load was used to measure the tracking between the first two production units at the manufa… more

Construction Status and Issues of the Spallation Neutron Source Ring

Description: The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) ring is designed to accumulate beam pulses of 1.5 x 10{sup 14} protons of 1 GeV kinetic energy at a repetition rate of 60 Hz [1]. At such beam intensity and power, key design challenges include control of beam loss and radio-activation, construction of high-quality large-aperture magnets and power supplies, design of robust injection and extraction systems, minimization of beam-coupling impedances, and mitigation of electron-cloud effects. This paper discusse… more

A Multi-Sample Cs-Sputter Negative Ion Source

Description: A multi-sample Cs sputter negative-ion source, equipped with a conical-geometry, W-surface-ionizer has been designed and fabricated that permits sample changes without disruption of on-line accelerator operation. Sample changing is effected by actuating an electro-pneumatic control system located at ground potential that drives an air-motor-driven sample-indexing-system mounted at high voltage; this arrangement avoids complications associated with indexing mechanisms that rely on electronic pow… more

Description: Researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and EG&G Energy Measurements are developing a new solid-state power system for two proposed accelerators. One of the accelerators is a circular arrangement of induction cells called a recirculator. It is designed to accelerate heavy ions for an inertial fusion study that proposes to substitute heavy-ion beams for laser beams as the driver for fusion targets. The other accelerator is a linear induction accelerator for electron beams calle… more
