In an anharmonic crystal, large-amplitude vibrational fluctuations on the scale of the lattice spacing can develop frequencies that do not resonate with the normal modes, causing energy to become trapped in intrinsically localized modes (ILMs)--also called 'discrete breathers' or 'lattice solitons'.
