Kilowatt Isotope Power System: test procedure for the ground demonstration system. 77-KIPS-63

Description: This test procedure provides a detailed description of the verification methods which shall be used during development, performance and endurance testing to be conducted on the Kilowatt Isotope Power System (KIPS) Development Ground Demonstration Systems, P/N's 722487 and 723829 and Ground Demonstration System (GDS), P/N 725100. The objectives of this testing are to demonstrate system performance in a controlled environment; to verify results of performance predictions; to verify results compil… more

Preliminary theoretical acoustic and rf sounding calculations for MILL RACE

Description: As participant in DOE/ISA's Ionospheric Monitoring Program, LLNL has the responsibility of providing theoretical understanding and calculational support for experimental activities carried out by Los Alamos National Laboratory in using ionospheric sounders to remotely detect violent atmospheric phenomena. We have developed a system of interconnected computer codes which simulate the entire range of atmospheric and ionospheric processes involved in this remote detection procedure. We are able to… more

Reactor issues for tandem mirrors operating in the negative-potential mode

Description: During 1985, interest has been revived at LLNL in tandem mirrors operating in the negative-potential mode. The negative tandem is formed by combining ECRH-sustained hot electron end cell plasmas with pumping mechanisms to remove trapped ions from the end cells. No sloshing ions are required. The resulting negative potential in the end cells confines the central cell electrons. The requirement of charge neutrality causes the ambipolar potential of the central cell to become negative relative to … more

A Main Ring bunch length monitor by detecting two frequency components of the beam

Description: The bunch length is measured by detecting two revolution frequency harmonics of the beam and taking the ratio of their amplitudes. Two heterodyne receivers have been made to direct them, one at 53MHz and the other at 159MHz. These signals are picked-up by a stripline detector. An analog circuit provides a signal proportional to the bunch length. The monitor measures variation of the bunch length as a function of time in the Main Ring. The measured signal, which sometimes shows that the bunches … more

Engineering Research Division report on reports calendar year 1978

Description: Each year the Engineering Research Division of the Electronics Engineering Department has issued an internal report listing of all formal publications produced by the division during the calendar year. The report for 1978 is being issued in two sections (the second section has been expanded from the former format due to a change in collection of information implemented during the calendar year 1978). The first section (covering January 1978 through June 1978) lists the titles, report numbers, a… more

Beam Breakup (BBU) instability experiments on the Experimental Test Accelerator (ETA) and predictions for the Advanced Test Accelerator (ATA)

Description: In linear accelerators the maximum achievable beam current is often limited by the Beam Breakup (BBU) instability. This instability arises from the interaction of a transversely displaced beam with the dipole modes of the acceleration cavities. The modes of interest have non-zero transverse magnetic fields at the center of the cavity. This oscillating field imparts a time varying transverse impulse to the beam as it passes through the accelerating gap. Of the various modes possible only the TM/… more

Switching transients in the MFTF yin-yang coils

Description: This report is a study of the transients caused by the fast dump of large superconducting coils. Theoretical analysis, computer simulation, and actual measurements are used. Theoretical analysis can only be applied to the simplest of models. In the computer simulations two models are used, one in which the coil is divided into ten segments and another in which a single coil is employed. The circuit breaker that interrupts the current to the power supply, causing a fast dump, is represented by a… more

Transient analysis Brayton Isotope Power System supplement I

Description: The purpose of this study was to obtain a simulation of the most rapid start-up thermal transient which would be encountered in the BIPS operation. As an aid in reducing the severity of the transient, it was agreed with the NASA that the case to examine would be determined by the following logic: (a) determine the lowest temperature at which a start could be accomplished using a 2 HSA configuration; and (b) define the transients for a 3 HSA start which was initiated when the heat source achieve… more

Kilowatt Isotope Power System: Component Test Report for the Electric Heat Source Assembly. 77-KIPS-108

Description: The purpose of the acceptance testing was to demonstrate that the electrical heat source assembly (EHSA) has completed sufficient testing to satisfy the requirements set forth within the Kilowatt Isotope Power System (KIPS) Component Test Procedure (No. KIPS1020304) for the electrical heat source assembly. The results of the acceptance testing/analysis on the EHSA are presented.

Iris tilting and RF steering in the SLAC Linac

Description: For some time now, the sources of RF transverse beam steering in the SLAC Linac have been a mystery. The previously known sources, coupler asymmetries and survey misalignment, have predicted deflections which are frequently much smaller than the observed deflections. A new source of RF steering has been discovered: the tilting of accelerator irises. Measurements of iris tilting in a forty foot accelerator girder are compared with measurements of RF beam deflections and are found to be strongly … more
