Proper use of the Nordheim integral treatment for resonance processing

Description: The Nordheim integral treatment is an approximate method for determining the neutron spectra within materials containing resonance cross sections. These spectra are necessary to determine the flux-weighted multigroup data properly. In practice, the resonance material multigroup cross sections produced by use of Nordheim-generated spectra are combined with other multigroup cross sections, and further energy and spatial collapsing of the data is performed. The question arises of whether performin… more

Conceptual design of retrieval systems for emplaced transuranic waste containers in a salt bed depository. Final report

Description: The US Department of Energy and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission have jurisdiction over the nuclear waste management program. Design studies were previously made of proposed repository site configurations for the receiving, processing, and storage of nuclear wastes. However, these studies did not provide operational designs that were suitable for highly reliable TRU retrieval in the deep geologic salt environment for the required 60-year period. The purpose of this report is to develop a conce… more

Slow neutron leakage spectra from spallation neutron sources

Description: An efficient technique is described for Monte Carlo simulation of neutron beam spectra from target-moderator-reflector assemblies typical of pulsed spallation neutron sources. The technique involves the scoring of the transport-theoretical probability that a neutron will emerge from the moderator surface in the direction of interest, at each collision. An angle-biasing probability is also introduced which further enhances efficiency in simple problems. These modifications were introduced into t… more

Determination of in-situ thermal properties of Stripa granite from temperature measurements in the full-scale heater experiments: method and preliminary results. Technical information report No. 24

Description: The in-situ thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of a granite rock mass at the Stripa mine, Sweden, have been extracted from the first 70 days of temperature data for the 5 kW full-scale heater experiment by means of least-squares fit to a finite-line source solution. Thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity have been determined to be 3.69 W/(m-/sup 0/C) and 1.84 x 10/sup -6/ m/sup 2//s, respectively, at an average rock temperature of 23/sup 0/C (the average value of the actual temp… more

Effects of preoxidation on the swelling and softening of bituminous coals

Description: A study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of a DuPont 942-TMA (Thermomechanical Analyzer) dilatometer system for the characterization of the swelling and softening properties of caking coals. The results of this investigation demonstrate the utility of this dilatometer system. Several parameters clearly defined with this unit are characteristic of the plastic transitions occurring upon carbonization. These include softening, dilation and resolidification temperature and volume contrac… more

Oxygen/steam gasification of wood

Description: Yields from fixed-bed gasification of stoker fuel, pressed planar shavings, are presented for air/steam operation and oxygen/steam operation at four different compositions. The wood carbon distributes between gas products and liquid products in the respective ranges of 75 to 80 wt% and 20 to 25 wt%. The cold gas efficiencies, defined as the combustible energy in the gas divided by the heat of combustion of the wood, were 60% for operation with an air-to-steam weight ratio of 10, 52%, 61%, 59%, … more

Operational accidents and radiation exposures at ERDA facilities, 1975-1977

Description: The Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) accident frequency and losses were similar to that of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) from 1970 through 1974. The ERDA incidence rates per 200,000 work hours were 1.05 for lost workday injuries and 17.8 for workdays lost. These rates are about one-third of the national industrial averages reported by the National Safety Council (NSC). Ten fatalities occurred at ERDA facilities resulting in an average annual rate of three deaths per 10… more

Effects of coal combustion and gasification process contaminants on the neuromuscular system. Sub-task on peripheral nervous system effects. Final report

Description: This study is a preliminary investigation of the possible toxic effects of flyash particles from an experimental fluidized-bed combustion process at the Morgantown Energy Research Center. Emphasis has been placed on the action of trace metals present on the surface and in the matrix of the particulates emissions, since these elements may be toxic in low dosages. It is well established that external calcium (Ca/sup 2 +/) is essential for neuromuscular transmission. In the absence of Ca/sup 2 +/ … more

Effect of the nuclear equation of state on high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Description: The effect of the nuclear equation of state on high-energy heavy-ion collisions is studied in two separate ways on the basis of conventional nuclear fluid dynamics. The equation of state has the property that the speed of sound approaches the speed of light in the limit of infinite compression. In the first way, nonrelativistic equations of motion are solved for various values of the nuclear compressibility coefficient for the expansion of spherically symmetric nuclear matter. The matter is ini… more
