Determination of the Occurrence of Gold in an Unoxidized Carlin-Type Ore Sample Using Synchrotron Radiation

Description: The occurrence of the so-called invisible gold in two unoxidized Carlin-type gold samples from Nevada have been determined using synchrotron x-ray fluorescence (SXRF) analysis at the National Sychrotron Light Source, Brookhaven National Laboratory. The samples were a bedded sample from the east ore zone of the Carlin deposit and a breccia sample from Horse Canyon. Preliminary results show that gold is found only in the Horse Canyon breccia sample. Experimental details including other x-ray line… more

Possible Indication of an a-Dependence of R in Deep-Inelastic Electron Scattering From Nuclei

Description: Measurements of R for deuterium, He, Al, Fe and Au were made at Q/sup 2/ = 5 (GeV/c)/sup 2/ and x = 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7. An indication of a possible A-dependence of R has been found which would result in large differences among sigma/sup A//sigma/sup d/, F/sub 2//sup A//F/sub 2//sup d/ and F/sub 1//sup A//F/sub 1//sup d/. 7 references, 4 figures.

The Emittances and Brightnesses of High-Intensity Negative Ion Sources

Description: The emittances of high-intensity ion beams extracted from cesium sputter negative ion sources equipped with cylindrical and ellipsoidal solid tungsten and spiral-wound tantalum (General Ionex Corporation, Model 860), and cesium surface ionizers have been measured for several ion species, including /sup 12/C/sup -/, /sup 28/Si/sup -/, /sup 58/Ni/sup -/, and /sup 197/Au/sup -/. While certain sets of data from the ellipsoidal and cylindrical geometry ionizer sources suggest a moderate growth in em… more

Emittance growth, tune shift, and the bunched-beam, bunched-beam interaction

Description: While it is understood that the main limitation of beam lifetime in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven is the emittance growth due to intra-beam scattering, it is important to evaluate and understand both the emittance growth and nature of the tune shift due to multiple beam-beam crossings of the bunched-beams of heavy ions. We note within RHIC, fully stripped /sup 197/Au ions (charge 79e/sup +/) will survive up to ten hours in the collider, with six beam crossings per rev… more

The heavy ion injection scheme for RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider)

Description: The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven has a multi-component injection system. The Collider requires very heavy ions such as /sub 79//sup 197/Au to be injected fully stripped of atomic electrons, at a kinetic energy of approximately 10 GeV/nucleon. However, the heavy ions are produced initially at a negative ion source and accelerated first in a 15 MV Tandem. These partially stripped ions have a kinetic energy of approximately 1 MeV/nucleon on leaving the Tandem. In order to a… more

Resonance Integrals and Self-Shielding Factors for Detector Foils

Description: >Effective activation resonance integrals for thin and thick foils in an isotropic neutron flux were measured by a cadmium ratio method. Gold was used as a standard. Values obtained for dilute resonance integrals in barns, not including 1/v capture, were: Au/sup 197/, 1390 plus or minus 40 (Reference); U/ sup 238/ capture, 280 plus or minus 10; Cu/sup 63/, 3.17 plus or minus 0.18; Cu/sup 65/, 1.39 plus or minus 0.22; Mo/sup 98/, 9.9 plus or minus 1.1; Mo/sup 100/, 4.06 plus or minus 0.23; W/… more

Chemical Engineering Division fast-neutron dosimetry annual report, July 1975--June 1976

Description: One of the objectives of the Dosimetry and Damage Analysis Center is to provide standardized dosimetry technology for materials-study programs within the ERDA Division of Magnetic Fusion Energy. Current efforts have included characterization of neutron environments in terms of fluence and spectral distribution for materials experiments conducted at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory's (LLL) Rotating Target Neutron Source and at the LLL-Davis Cyclograaff. Environment characterization efforts… more

Heavy Residue Spectra in the Interaction of 85 A MeV 12C with197Au

Description: We have measured the heavy residue differential range distributions in the interaction of 85 MeV/nucleon {sup 12}C with {sup 197}Au. The range distributions were converted to energy spectra using known range-energy relationships. The mean residue energies range from 15 keV/nucleon (A = 189) to 314 keV/nucleon (A = 131). Longitudinal momenta of the heavy residues have been deduced (<p{sub {parallel}} > /p{sub cn} = 0.27). The mean spectral energies and the shapes of the residue spectra are… more

Electron Transfer Processes in Collisions of Highly Charged Energetic (0.1 to 1.0 MeV/nucleon) Ions with Helium Atoms

Description: We have investigated charge transfer in collisions of energetic (0.1 - 1 MeV/nucleon) highly charged ions with helium atoms with the principal aim clarifying the nature of two-electron processes. The sensitivity of partial charge-changing cross sections (i.e., single- and double-charge transfer, transfer ionization (TI), and single and double ionization) to core configuration and scaling rules for one- and two-electron processes were investigated with iodine ions (q = 5+ ..-->.. 26+) and uraniu… more

A method for neutron dosimetry in ultrahigh flux environments

Description: A method for neutron dosimetry in ultrahigh flux environments is developed, and devices embodying it are proposed and simulated using a Monte Carlo code. The new approach no longer assumes a linear relationship between the fluence and the activity of the nuclides formed by irradiation. It accounts for depletion of the original ``foil`` material and for decay and depletion of the formed nuclides. In facilities where very high fluences are possible, the fluences inferred by activity measurements … more

Description: Fusion excitation functions spanning the entire barrier region in 1 MeV energy steps for the two systems {sup 40}Ca + {sup 192}Os, {sup 194}Pt are presented. The results of fission fragment angular distribution measurements for fusion-fission of {sup 40}Ca + {sup 197}Au at several projectile energies within the barrier region are also presented. The fusion data is of high enough precision to allow for extraction of the distribution of fusion barriers from the second differential of the product … more
