Spheromak heating with Alfven waves

Description: The temperature of present spheromak plasmas will need to be raised in order to test the feasibility of the confinement concept. In addition, a spatially-selective rf heating pulse can be used to study transport. As the ohmic heating power within a spheromak can be quite large (6-MW), low frequencies where large amounts of power are available are preferred. For the Los Alamos spheromak experiment CTX, we propose to add heating energy via a shear Alfven wave resonance. This resonance can be made… more

Resonant-cavity ICRF coupler for large tokamaks

Description: A new resonant-cavity ICRF coupler is proposed for large tokamaks. The design features a novel resonant cavity, an rf magnetic-field orientation that effectively radiates fast Alfven waves, matching to 40 ..cap omega.. transmission lines, and an electric-field orientation so that the strongest rf electric fields are orthogonal to the main toroidal magnetic field thereby benefitting from magnetic insulation. As a result, the power handling capability is excellent. For the case of the Big-Dee Dou… more

Effect of alpha drift and instabilities on tokamak plasma edge conditions

Description: As suprathermal fusion products slow down in a Tokamak, their average drift is inward. The effect of this drift on the alpha heating and thermalization profiles is examined. In smaller TFTR-type devices, heating in the outer region can be cut in half. Also, the fusion-product energy-distribution near the plasma edge has a positive slope with increasing energy, representing a possible driving mechanism for micro-instabilities. Another instability that can seriously affect outer plasma conditions… more

Spectrum of resistive MHD modes in cylindrical plasmas

Description: A numerical study of the normal modes of a compressible resistive MHD fluid in cylindrical geometry is presented. Resistivity resolves the shear Alfven and slow magnetosonic continua of ideal MHD into discrete spectra and gives rise to heavily damped modes whose frequencies lie on specific lines in the complex plane. Fast magnetosonic waves are less affected but are also damped. Overstable modes arise from the shear Alfven spectrum. The stabilizing effect of favorable average curvature is shown… more
