Grain Refinement of Uranium by Alloying

Description: Binary alloys of uranium with 38 elements in the range 0.01 to 1.0 at.% were made. Three alloys having nominal compositions of 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 at.% were made with most of the elements, and in addition, 12 ternary and quaternary alloys were made. The alloys were cast, rolled to 7/8-inch-diameter bars, heat treated, and examined for grain size.

Jacketing of Uranium for High-Temperture Service

Description: From introduction: "The work covered in this report is a portion of the experimental research undertaken for the design of a uranium-containing metallic fuel rod for operation in air at 1090 C...This report deals with that phase which involved the testing and evaluation of various metals as barrier costs between uranium alloys, and low-carbon steel. The work is of a preliminary nature and is concerned more with a comparison of the various barrier metals than with the acquisition of numerical da… more

Particle size of particulate matter in the dissolver off-gas stream

Description: This report discusses particle size measurements with a modified cascade impactor of the particulate matter in the dissolver off-gases during the period of maximum gas evolution, and during the air sparge of the dissolver solution after the completion of the dissolving cycle which indicate that the mass-size median of the particles was less than 0.1 micron in both cases. The measurements were made, unfortunately, at a time when the efficiency of the silver reactor upstream to the sampling point… more

Metallurgy Division Quarterly Progress Report for Period Ending October 31, 1950

Description: Minor changes in materials and methods resulted in increased yields in the production of fuel elements for the Bulk Shielding Facility. Attempts to bond uranium to a mercury-- silver alloy resulted in bonds of insufficient strength. Thorium alloys containing 2 to 4% Nb. Cr. Mn, Ti, Zr, Be. Al, and Si were prepared. The alloys containing Be, Al. or Si were hard, brittle, and not cold-workable. The alloys containing the other elements were coldworkable in the as-cast condition. Impact testing of … more

The Effects of Atomic Weapons on Glazing and Window Construction. Annex 3.5 of Scientific Director's Report of Atomic Weapon Tests at Eniwetok. 1951. Operation Greenhouse

Description: BS>Various types of wood, steel, and aluminum window construction, glazed with plastic and different kinds of glass, were installed on four sides of a test structure during the greenhouse tests in order to determine their relative resistance to an atomic blast. The degree of protection from flying glass provided by mounting Venetian blinds, insect screens, and 1/4-in. mesh wire netting on the inside of window openings was also determined. The best results seem to indicate that the resistances o… more
