Proton-Proton Scattering at 340 MeV

Description: Measurements of the proton-proton differential scattering cross section using 340 Mev protons show a cross section approximately constant between 41{sup o} and 90{sup o} in the center of mass system. Two methods of counting the scattered protons have been used. The first method uses a counter telescope to count the scattered protons. The second method utilizes coincidences between counters which record the two protons involved in a single scattering process. The first method gives slightly high… more

Exploratory Scavenging Studies for the Decontamination of Redox Solutions

Description: From introduction: "This report is concerned with exploratory experiments designed to studies the efficiency of a number of scavengers for zirconium and niobium adsorption and to provide preliminary information on the best conditions to employ on the most satisfactory of those scavengers studied, namely Super Filtrol FO. The data in this report include data obtained through October, 1949, and are by no means considered to be final. The investigation is currently being actively continued."

The Coulometric Determination of Acid

Description: Introduction: "The need for a method of acid determination which could be used for small samples and easily adapted to remote control led to the investigation of the use of electrolytically generated base for the titration of acid in certain solutions. The use of electrolytically generated base for the titration of acetic acid in the presence of nitric acid has been reported (1)."

The Development of Plutonium Electrodeposition Methods : Interim Report

Description: From introduction: "The following report presents a body of information obtained in the Health Instrument Development Laboratory from September, 1948, to the present, and is intended to be a preliminary review of [the study of electrodeposition of plutonium]. Many improvements in technique and methods and investigations along lines not explored are suggested by the present work. These will be undertaken as time permits, and reported at a later time."

H. W. Laboratory manual: 100 Area section

Description: The purpose of this manual is to present a Hazard Breakdown of all jobs normally encountered in the laboratory work of the three sections comprising the Analytic Section, Metallurgy and Control Division of the Technical Department. A Hazard Breakdown is a careful analysis of any job in which the source of possible dangers is clearly indicated for each particular step. The analysis is prepared by individuals who are thoroughly familiar with the specific job or procedure. It is felt that if the h… more

Quarterly Progress Report (April 1 to June 30, 1950)

Description: This is the second of a series of Quarterly Progress Reports. While most of the departments have summarized their work or used a form comparable to abstracts, the Chemistry Department has given both abstracts and complete reports on its work. The major part of the progress in the Reactor Science and Engineering Department is being presented simultaneously in a separate classified report. There are reports from the following departments: (1) physics department; (2) instrumentation and health phy… more

Quarterly Report for General Research October - November - December, 1949 (Deleted Version)

Description: The extraction of radium from uranium residues was proposed either by the use of the old (Curie) process or by the development and use of a new process. Qualitative procedures for the extraction of radium from pitch-blende are found recorded in the literature but little quantitative data are available. In order to become acquainted with the process and techniques involved, an attempt was made to use the method developed by the Curies, which essentially is being used by the Eldorado Gold Mines, … more

A Surface Protective System

Description: Part of the design and development work connected with the erection of the chemistry "cave" in the "GP" Building entailed an investigation of various protective measures for materials of construction. This work was based on the observations and recommendations of personnel engaged in work at a similar installation at Argonne National Laboratory.

Soldering Small Beads to Fine Wires

Description: One method suggested for soldering small beads to fine wires using a torch to heat the bead, flux, and magnesia brick did not prove entirely satisfactory in this case. It was found the brick would draw heat away from the bead and flux at too fast a rate resulting in a poor weld, a rough surface, and an excessive accumulation of flux on the bead. Secondly, removal of the depleted flux presented a problem when the welding was done on the surface of the brick.

Quarterly Report for General Research January - February - March, 1950

Description: The thermal conductivity of the gradient medium plays a very important part in the development of a calorimeter. It is a large factor in determining the sensitivity. The thermal conductivity apparatus was built primarily to find out why the measured sensitivities of the microcalorimeters were so much smaller than the calculated values. This question haa been resolved. The apparatus is now being used to study the thermal conductivity of Santocel, a granular insulating material produced by Monsan… more

The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis IX. Photosynthesis,Photoreduction and the Hydrogen-Oxygen-Carbon Dioxide Dark Reaction

Description: A comparison of the rates of fixation of Carbon 14 dioxide in algae for the processes of photosynthesis, photoreduction and the hydrogen-oxygen-carbon dioxide dark reaction has been made. For the same series of experiments, rates of incorporation of tracer carbon into the separate soluble components using the radiogram method have been determined. The mechanism of carbon dioxide uptake has been shown to occur via two distinct paths. In all cases studied, essentially the same compounds appear ra… more
