FY 1992 task plans for the Hanford Environmental Dose Reconstruction Project

Description: Phase 1 of the HEDR Project was designed to develop and demonstrate a method for estimating radiation doses people may have received from Hanford Site operations since 1944. The method researchers developed relied on a variety of measured and reconstructed data as input to a modular computer model that generates dose estimates and their uncertainties. As part of Phase 1, researchers used the reconstructed data and computer model to calculate preliminary dose estimates for populations from limit… more

Experience with NQA-1 quality assurance standards applied to in vitro bioassay

Description: On June 1, 1990, the large (about 4000 samples per year) excreta bioassay program at the Hanford Site ceased abruptly when the contract with the bioassay laboratory was terminated. An intense, high-priority effort was begun to replace the services on an interim basis until a new contract could be procured. Despite the urgency to get the excreta bioassay program going again, the Hanford Internal Dosimetry Program was constrained to use only labs that could meet stringent quality assurance (QA) r… more

FY 1993 task plans for the Hanford Environmental Dose Reconstruction Project

Description: The purpose of the Hanford Environmental Dose Reconstruction (HEDR) Project is to estimate radiation doses from Hanford Site operations since 1944 to individuals and populations. The primary objective of work to be performed in FY 1993 is to complete the source term estimates and dose estimates for key radionuclides for the air and river pathways. At the end of FY 1993, the capability will be in place to estimate doses for individuals in the extended (32-county) study area, 1944--1991. Native A… more

Information resource management concepts for records managers

Description: Information Resource Management (ERM) is the label given to the various approaches used to foster greater accountability for the use of computing resources. It is a corporate philosophy that treats information as it would its other resources. There is a reorientation from simply expenditures to considering the value of the data stored on that hardware. Accountability for computing resources is expanding beyond just the data processing (DP) or management information systems (MIS) manager to incl… more

Developing a personal-computer-based records retention system using Paradox{trademark}

Description: Many records managers are confronted with large caches of records stored in corners, attics, or warehouses that seem to be ``out of sight, out of mind.`` Much of this information becomes ``lost`` because it is not properly identified and cataloged. Perhaps the records have always been stored in these places because the lack of an alternative. In these situations, the records manager must organize and catalog the records and provide solutions to the records management and storage problems. A sim… more

Automating occupational protection records systems

Description: Occupational protection records have traditionally been generated by field and laboratory personnel, assembled into files in the safety office, and eventually stored in a warehouse or other facility. Until recently, these records have been primarily paper copies, often handwritten. Sometimes, the paper is microfilmed for storage. However, electronic records are beginning to replace these traditional methods. The purpose of this paper is to provide guidance for making the transition to automated… more

Consistency of external dosimetry in epidemiologic studies of nuclear workers

Description: To make the best use of available epidemiologic data in assessing risks from exposure to low-level radiation, it is important that biases and uncertainties in estimated doses be understood and documented. With this understanding, analyses of mortality data can be strengthened by including the use of correction factors where judged appropriate, excluding portions of the data where uncertainty in dose estimates is judged to be very large, and conducting sensitivity analyses to examine the effect … more

That was then and this is now: A case study of document control for the Advanced Test Reactor

Description: Even as Department of Energy (DOE) budgets are being adjusted to reflect the changing international scene, DOE and its contractors are becoming more proactive in environment, safety, and health. This focus places stringent requirements on Configuration Management-Document Control. EG&G Idaho, Inc. (EG&G Idaho), a prime management and operations contractor for DOE at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL), operates the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) as a major continuing program. The ATR … more

A model for life cycle records management

Description: The primary objective of this paper is to update an old Records Management concept; the management of records according to the records life cycle. Accordingly, the authors are presenting a new version of the Records Management life cycle model and its associated elements. The basic concept is that every record progresses through three phases; a record is created, is used and maintained, and dispositioned. In this presentation, the authors update the very old straight line model and the more cur… more
