Description: In this project we intend to study a novel process concept, i.e, the use of ceramic membranes reactors in upgrading of coal derived liquids. Phosphate-bonded glass cements for geothermal wells. Final report

Description: Calcium aluminosilicate glasses were found to react with phosphoric acid in three ways depending upon silica content. Above 55% SiO/sub 2/ they are insoluble while below 50% they dissolve readily. The transition compositions release calcium and aluminum ions and a silica gel phase replaces the glass. Activation energies in the order of 10 kcal/mole are associated with the dissolution. Adsorption of Krypton and Xenon by Various Materials

Description: The adsorptive capacities of various inorganic adsorbents and activated charcoals for krypton and xenon were determined. Columbia-G activated charcoal had the highest capacity for both krypton and xenon at pressures from 0.01 to 125 mm Hg and temperaturens from 2 to 85 deg C. If a value of 1 is assigned to the capacity of this charcoal at 28 deg C for krypton, other charcoals range from 0.63 to 0.84, molecular sieves (except 4A) from 0.11 to 0.20, and some silica genls from 0.05 to 0.07. Removal of silica from Raft River geothermal water

Description: Lack of sufficient quantities of clean surface or near-surface water at Raft River for cooling purposes dictates that cooled geothermal fluid, effluent from the Raft River 5 MW(e) Pilot Power Plant, must also be used as condenser coolant. Development and evaluation of die and container materials. Final report

Description: Specific compositions of high purity silicon aluminum oxynitride (Sialon) and silicon beryllium oxynitride (Sibeon) solid solutions are shown to be promising refractory materials for handling and manipulating solar grade silicon into silicon ribbon. Analysis of a neutron scattering and gamma-ray production integral and experiment on silicon dioxide for neutron energies from 1 to 15 MeV

Description: Monte Carlo calculations were made to analyze the results of an integral experiment with a sample of SiO/sub 2/ to determine the adequacy of ENDF/B-IV neutron scattering and gamma-ray production cross-section data for silicon and oxygen. Conditioning of geothermal brine effluents for injection: use of coagulants

Description: The use of various chemical coagulants and flocculants with spent geothermal brine for enhancing the removal of colloidal solids prior to injection was studied. Anion Exchange in a Large-Scale Agitated Bed

Description: An agitated ion exchange column was adapted for use in a large radiochemical separations plant. Tests with nonradioactive solutions showed that ion exchange resin could be charged to and discharged from the column through typical plant piping and without the use of mechanical valves.
