Radiation damage studies related to nuclear waste forms

Description: Much of the previously reported work on alpha radiation effects on crystalline phases of importance to nuclear waste forms has been derived from radiation effects studies of composite waste forms. In the present work, two single-phase crystalline materials, Gd/sub 2/Ti/sub 2/O/sub 7/ (pyrochlore) and CaZrTi/sub 2/O/sub 7/ (zirconolite), of relative importance to current waste forms were studied independently by doping with /sup 244/Cm at the 3 wt % level. Changes in the crystalline structure me… more

A 2-D imaging heat-flux gauge

Description: This report describes a new leadless two-dimensional imaging optical heat-flux gauge. The gauge is made by depositing arrays of thermorgraphic-phosphor (TP) spots onto the faces of a polymethylpentene is insulator. In the first section of the report, we describe several gauge configurations and their prototype realizations. A satisfactory configuration is an array of right triangles on each face that overlay to form squares when the gauge is viewed normal to the surface. The next section of the… more

Description: Thermal conductivity measurements of the p-type and n-type selenide alloys after 19,800 hours and 6,500 hours, respectively, continue to show good agreement with the 3M Co. published data. Ingradient testing of n-legs after 8900 hours show comparable performance to the reported 3M data. Ingradient testing of p-legs at accelerated test conditions has completed 5432 hours and performance shows reasonable correlation with accelerated temperature and current gradients. This test has been discontinu… more

Compatibility of Pt-3008 with selected components of the selenide isotope generator system

Description: The first in a new generation of radioisotopic thermoelectric generators being built by Teledyne Energy Systems and designated the Selenide Isotope Generator has thermoelectric materials that can be degraded by reaction with O/sub 2/, H/sub 2/O, CO, and other gases. Consequently, for at least the first ground demonstration system a protective xenon atmosphere will be maintained over the thermoelectrics. The high-temperature portion of the atmosphere-retaining structure will be fabricated from t… more

Bremsstrahlung-Induced K Fluorescence

Description: Bremsstrahlung radiation can be used to excite nearly monoenergetic x rays in secondary targets, which are then used to study the energy response of radiation detectors if the intensity and purity are known. A method is suggested for calculating the spectral intensity of the secondary target radiation, including K-fluorescent x rays, and the bremsstrahlung and characteristic line radiation scattered from the target. Coherent and incoherent scatter are included in the calculation. To test the th… more

Immobilization of sodium and phosphorus-bearing PW-7a waste in SYNROC. Progress report. [SYNROC C]

Description: The phosphorus, sodium and gadolinium-rich PW-7a waste can be successfully incorporated in SYNROC-C. However, a new accessory phase, a Ca,Na,Ba phosphate isostructural with Ca/sub 5/Na/sub 2/(PO/sub 4/)/sub 4/ apppears in the SYNROC mineralogy. There is no evidence for the partition of key radionuclides (e.g. Sr, REE and hence actinides) into this phosphate. Its poor resistance to groundwater dissolution, whilst hardly desirable, may therefore not have a serious effect on the leaching performan… more

Synthesis and in-vivo detection of boronated compounds for use in BNCT. Final progress report, August 1, 1989--April 30, 1993

Description: Carboranes contain ten boron atoms in a three-dimensional space equivalent to a benzene ring; consequently, the carborane isomers can be utilized to prepare a variety of boron-rich agents for potential use in boron-neutron capture therapy. We developed synthetic methodology suitable for use with carboranes preparing amino acids and other physio-logically active compounds of potential use in BNCT. The methodology involves the conversion of simple carboranes into more complex, reactive organometa… more
