Apparatus for simultaneously measuring electrical conductivity and oxygen fugacity

Description: Electrical conductivity studies of silicates are useful in determining temperature vs depth in the earth. Realistic laboratory measurements of conduction mechanisms require that exact determinations of oxygen fugacity (fo{sub 2}) be made in the experimental environment. An apparatus is described that monitors system fo{sub 2} with a calcia-doped zirconia-oxygen cell while measuring electrical conductivity of iron-bearing silicates at high temperature (greater than 1000 K). The fo{sub 2} calcula… more

Investigation of a lithium electrolytic cell failure

Description: Electrolytic cells, used to produce lithium metal, fail after approximately three years in service. A metallurgical investigation revealed that molten lithium at 440/sup 0/C was dissolving the carbon in the cementite which is a constituent in the steel plate from which the cell is fabricated.

Studies of heavy-ion reactions and transuranic nuclei

Description: The development of the cold-fusion'' episode is reviewed. Ongoing studies of compound-nucleus formation and decay via the neutron multiplicity distribution confirm the validity of conventional statistical theory. The excitation energy partition in near-barrier damped {sup 58}Ni + {sup 208}Pb collisions is found to be largely independent of the direction of net mass transfer, supporting a diffusion-like nucleon-exchange mechanism. Exclusive experiments on the heavy reaction systems {sup 197}Au +… more

Photoassisted electrolysis applied to coal gasification. Third quarterly report, 1 January 1982-31 Mar 1982

Description: The literature search on electrochemical studies of various carbons has been completed. Two conclusions were reached: (1) The surfaces of various carbons are covered by oxide films to different extents and the oxides resemble either the quinone-like structure in their oxidized form or the hydroquinone-like structure in the reduced form. (2) When carbonaceous materials are oxidized chemically, electrochemically, or thermally, the first stage involves formation of the oxide film and the later sta… more

Evaluation of selected chemical processes for production of low-cost silicon. Phase III. Eighteenth quarterly progress report, January 1-March 31, 1980

Description: Progress during this report period was marked by the initial operation of the Process Development Unit at about 50% of design capacity with indications that many aspects of the facility operated satisfactorily. However, a downstream constriction, the cause of which is being isolated, led to termination of the run after one-half hour of operation. In the light of observations made during earlier start-up efforts, several modifications of equipment and technique were made for improved operation. … more

Sensitized photoelectrolysis of water with sunlight. Progress report, June 1--August 31, 1977. [119 references]

Description: The subject of photoelectrolysis of water at illuminated semiconductor electrodes to produce hydrogen is reviewed from 1839 up to the present. 119 literature references are cited. Critical interpretations of important concepts in this area of investigation are given. Techniques for improving the response of cells are discussed, and the expected maximum efficiency is calculated. Additionally, some preliminary experimental results with impurity sensitization of TiO/sub 2/ electrodes and heterostr… more

Evaluation of selected chemical processes for production of low-cost silicon: Phase III. Silicon Material Task, Low-Cost Solar Array Project. Sixteenth/seventeenth quarterly progress report, July-December 31, 1979

Description: The method under development for the production of semiconductor grade silicon is based on the zinc vapor reduction of silicon tetrachloride in a fluidized bed of seed particles. Construction of the PDU was completed during the report period, the fluidized-bed reactor was coated internally with silicon/SiC, and the operation of several systems was checked out. However, problems with the zinc feed system, unrelated to its basic operability, delayed introduction of zinc vapor to the PDU. At the e… more

Energy savings by means of fuel cell electrodes in electro-chemical industries. Progress report, August 1-October 31, 1978

Description: Caustic half cells are described and data reported for tests run to evaluate the technology involved in the operation of air cathodes for the Caustic-Chlorine Industry. The majority of tests were run at 300 ASF in a 23% NaOH electrolyte at 75/sup 0/C with a CO/sub 2/ free air efficiency of 33%. Data are presented for a 7200-h life test which is in operation and represents the state of the art. Runs have been made to identify the limiting current density and air efficiency for the standard RA19 … more

Evaluation of selected chemical processes for production of low-cost silicon (Phase III). Silicon material task Low-Cost Solar Array Project. Nineteenth quarterly progress report, April 1-June 30, 1980

Description: Early in this report period, the PDU was operated for a short time (one-half hour) before downstream constrictions prompted termination. The problem was traced to malfunction of the wetted-wall by-product condenser owing to the zinc chloride having a higher-than-anticipated viscosity near its melting point. Since then, a number of problems, minor in origin but major in effect, have hampered operation of the PDU. Steps are being taken to correct these deficiencies of design or mode of operation … more
