Stress corrosion cracking of uranium--niobium alloys

Description: The stress corrosion cracking behavior of U-2/sup 1///sub 4/, 4/sup 1///sub 2/, 6 and 8 wt % Nb alloys was evaluated in laboratory air and in aqueous Cl/sup -/ solutions. Thresholds for crack propagation were obtained in these environments. The data showed that Cl/sup -/ solutions are more deleterious than air environments. SALT PHASE CHLORINATION OF REACTOR FUELS. IV. NIOBIUM BEHAVIOR IN THE LEAD CHLORIDE AND CHLORINE-LEAD CHLORIDE SYSTEMS

Description: Investigation of the behavior of Nb in PbCl/sub 2/ showed that the Nb dissolution rate is quite low. Since stirring increases the rate appreciably, it is likely that the initial reaction is diffusion controlled. A subsequent reaction is linear in rate with an activation energy of 23.4 kcal per mole. Incomplete volatilization of dissolved Nb from PbCl/sub 2/ is due to the presence of lower oxidation states of Nb. The addition of Cl to PbCl/sub 2/ increases the rate of dissolution of Nb. Description: The rapid dissolution of uranium dioxide is described, wherein copper is added to molten lead chloride at 550 deg C. and chlorine is passed through the melt. Chlorination of Uranium and Fission Product Oxides in Molten Halide Media

Description: The chlorination of mixtures of uranium and fission product oxides in various molten halide systems by sparging with a chlorine-carbon monoxide mixture was investigated. Determination of light elements in amalgam restorations. [Dental amalgam]

Description: Rutherford backscattering has been used to measure the major elemental compositions in the near-surface regions of freshly prepared and used samples of dental amalgam. Direct chlorination process for geothermal power plant off-gas - hydrogen sulfide abatement

Description: The Direct Chlorination Process removes hydrogen sulfide from geothermal off-gases by reacting hydrogen sulfide with chlorine in the gas phase. Hydrogen chloride and elemental sulfur are formed by this reaction. Description: Research progress is reported in three areas. The first area concerns the chromatography of copper organic complexes. This work is a continuation of study from previous contract years. The second concerns the use of chemical degradation experiments to determine the nature of the binding sites for copper.
