Geophysical investigation for proposed flow meter installation holes, 100H Area

Description: The objectives of the surveys were to locate subsurface obstructions that may affect the drilling of two holes to be fit with flow meters in the 100-H Area of the Hanford Site (Figure 1). Possible drill sites with the least likelihood of encountering identified obstructions were identified based upon the results of the survey. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) was the method selected for the investigations. The electromagnetic induction method was also used to verify that the general site is relat… more

Physical basis for climate change models

Description: The objectives for this research were two-fold: To identify means of using measurements of the outgoing radiation stream from earth to identify mechanisms of climate change; and to develop a flexible radiation code based upon the correlated-k method to enable rapid and accurate calculations of the outgoing radiation. The intended products are three papers and a radiation code. The three papers are to be on Entropy fluxes and the dissipation of the climate system, Radiation fingerprints of clima… more

Processes of community development and responses of ecosystems to climate change. Progress report, September 28, 1988--September 27, 1989

Description: Our studies focus on attempting to understand the role of decomposer-primary producer linkages in successional dynamics. We are testing a series of hypotheses that relate changes in plant species composition during succession to changes in activity and structure of the soil microfloral and faunal community, dynamics of soil organic matter, and availability of soil nutrients. As these successional patterns are identified, they are being applied to understanding specific processes and mechanics i… more

Apportionment of multiple aerosol size distributions modes using factor analysis techniques

Description: This research in progress is concerned with developing the capability to ojectively partition aerosol size distribution data into a small number of modes, that together explain most of the variation of the observed data. It is desired to determine from analysis in the field of the optical spectrometer data when a particular mode is present and to collect filter samples to determine the chemical composition of that mode. The results would relate aerosol size distributions to chemical composition. more

Numerical simulation of coupled flow and transport with TOUGH2: A verification study

Description: We have tested T2DM, the dispersion module of TOUGH2, on two classic flow problems: (1) the seawater intrusion problem of Henry (1964); and (2) the pure solutal free convection problem of Elder (1967). T2DM produces results in agreement with prior work for similar spatial discretizations. In the Henry problem, finer spatial discretization allows the seawater tongue to penetrate slightly farther without affecting the overall flow dynamics. In the strongly coupled pure solutal free convection pro… more

Kinetics and dynamics of oxidation reactions involving an adsorbed CO species on bulk and supported platinum and copper-oxide. First year annual report, January 1, 1991--December 31, 1991

Description: The proposed research is an integrated experimental and modeling study of oxidation reactions involving CO as a key player -- be it a reactant, adsorbed intermediate, and/or partial oxidation product -- in the catalytic sequence and chemistry. The reaction systems of interest in the project include CO, formaldehyde, and methanol oxidation by O{sub 2} and CO oxidation by NO, on both Pt and copper oxide catalysts. These reactions are of importance in automobile exhaust catalysis. There is a pauci… more

Results of acute and chronic toxicity tests conducted at SRS NPDES outfalls, July--October 1991

Description: Acute (48 hour LC50) and chronic (7-day reproductive impairment) toxicity tests were conducted on Ceriodaphnia dubia in water collected from 53 NPDES outfalls. All tests were conducted at the in-stream waste concentration. only 12 of the 53 outfalls showed no evidence of toxicity. Twenty-eight of the outfalls were acutely toxic, often producing 100% mortality during the first day of exposure. Fourteen outfalls had no discharge at the time of sampling and could not be tested. Three outfalls were… more

Use of Cloud Observations and Mesoscale Meteorology Models to Evaluate and Improve Cloud Parameterizations. Technical Progress Report, 1 October 1992--30 September 1993

Description: This research program utilizes satellite and surface-derived cloud observations together with standard meteorological measurements to evaluate and improve our ability to accurately diagnose cloud coverage. Results of this research will be used to compliment existing or future parameterizations of cloud effects in general circulation models, since nearly all cloud parameterizations must specify a fractional area of cloud coverage when calculating radiative or dynamic cloud effects, and current p… more

An integrated cloud observation and modeling investigation in support of the ARM program. Annual technical progress report, [September 15, 1992--September 14, 1993]

Description: This annual technical progress report, based on the same four divisions used in our original proposal, provides only a brief synopsis of the research carried out dudng the past three years. We have also included a brief description of algorithms and computer programs that have been transferred to the ARM management. Such transfers of knowledge and technique are vital for the success of the ARM program. Various members of our research group participated in two major field programs: the First ISS… more

Ecological survey of M-Field, Edgewood Area Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland

Description: An ecological survey was conducted on M-Field, at the Edgewood Area, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. M-Field is used routinely to test army smokes and obscurants, including brass flakes, carbon fibers, and fog oils. The field has been used for testing purposes for the past 40 years, but little documented history is available. Under current environmental regulations, the test field must be assessed periodically to document the presence or potential use of the area by threatened and endangered… more

A research program on radiative transfer model development in support of the ARM program. Progress report No. 1, 15 September 1990--14 September 1991

Description: The main research effort at AER on this project has been focused on the development of a rapid line-by-line multiple scattering code for availability to ARM in the September 1991 time frame. The first phase of the effort has been to consider the many approaches that have been developed to treat the multiple scattering problem. One of the important decisions that had to be resolved was the choice of line-by- line code. This report efforts to devise a code to address the scattering problem.
