Diffusion estimation for small emissions. Preliminary report

Description: A simplified approach is presented to the calculation of ground level concentrations of effluents from small industrial and fuel burning installations. It is intended to serve as a first approximation to a very complex process. Because each stack, building, and terrain configuration is different, actual ground concentrations may frequently differ from the values calculated here by a factor of two. Nonetheless, this procedure should be useful for determining whether ambient air quality standards… more

Rio Blanco Massive Hydraulic Fracture: Project Definition

Description: The Piceance Basin in Colorado contains an estimated 600 trillion cu ft of natural gas in place. Both the Rulison and Rio Blanco events have been detonated to determine the feasibility of nuclear fracturing to stimulate natural gas production in this basin. A demonstration program to test the relative effectiveness of massive hydraulic fracturing (MHF) to achieve natural gas production stimulation from the same gas reservoir is presented. Details are included on MHF design parameters, including… more

SNAP 19 Pioneer F and G. Final report

Description: The generator developed for the Pioneer mission evolved from the SNAP 19 RTG's launched aboard the NIMBUS III spacecraft. In order to satisfy the power requirements and environment of earth-escape trajectory, significant modifications were made to the thermoelectric converter, heat source, and structural configuration. Specifically, a TAGS-2N thermoelectric couple was designed to provide higher efficiency and improved long term power performance, and the electrical circuitry was modified to yie… more

Cooperative geochemical investigation of geothermal resources in the Imperial Valley and Yuma areas. Final report

Description: Preliminary studies indicate that the Imperial Valley has a large geothermal potential. In order to delineate additional geothermal systems a chemical and isotopic investigation of samples from water wells, springs, and geothermal wells in the Imperial Valley and Yuma areas was conducted. Na, K, and Ca concentrations of nearly 200 well water, spring water, hot spring, and geothermal fluid samples from the Imperial Valley area were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Fournier and Tr… more

Examination of T-111 clad uranium nitride fuel pins irradiated up to 13,000 hours at a clad temperature of 990/sup 0/C

Description: The examination of 27 fuel pins irradiated in the Plum Brook reactor facility is described. Curtailment of NASA sponsored nuclear programs prevented a complete examination of all pins. Nevertheless, results include fuel pin integrity, clad ductility, clad strain, fission gas release, fuel burnup, fuel swelling, neutron fluence, metallography, and instrumentation reliability. Twenty-two fuel pins were tested for fission gas leaks; 13 pins leaked with two having visible cracks. Fuel swelling appe… more
