Mechanical Properties of Zirconium and Zirconium-Uranium Alloys Containing Tin

Description: Abstract: "The mechanical properties of a large number of zirconium alloys have been investigated. These alloys include zirconium-tin and zirconium-tin-uranium. Tensile tests have been run on these alloys at room temperature, 500 F, and 600 F. Hot-hardness data have been obtained from room temperature to 1600 F, with particular emphasis on the hot-rolling range. Creep tests and fatigue tests have been run on a number of zirconium-tin alloys at 500 F."

Interim Report on Exploration in the Yellow Cat Area, Grand County, Utah

Description: From introduction: This report summarizes the results of diamond-drill and wagon-drill exploration by the U. S. Geological Survey in the Yellow Cat area from October 9, 1951, to May 22, 1952. The Yellow Cat area is about 10 miles southeast of Thompsons, Grand County, Utah. It is accessable by two graded roads which leave U. S. Highway 50 at points 5 miles east of Thompsons and 7 miles west of Cisco, Utah. A sampling plant and purchasing depot, belonging to the United States Vanadium Co., is at … more

A Countercurrent Solid-Liquid Contactor for Continuous Ion Exchange

Description: From abstract: "A continuous countercurrent solid-liquid contactor has been developed which retains the desirable features of the conventional fixed bed and gains the advantages of countercurrent flow. It can be adapted to many solid-liquid mass-transfer processes such as ion exchange, silica gel adsorption, and ore leaching."

Final report on Process Test MR-105-2, Orifice selection during reactor operation

Description: The test established that a practical orifice selecting device can be made and used to control the water flow rate to a process tube at either of two accurately calibrated rates with no loss of accuracy in flow measurement. With the selector tested, there was no flow restriction during the orifice transition. The pressure fluctuations during the change were small in magnitude, and caused no operational problem. The test demonstrated that orifice selection is feasible from operating other factor… more

Metallurgical Evaluation of the Uranium Rods Rolled for the Chalk River Pile Test

Description: Summary: "The laboratory data collected during the metallurgical evaluation of these rods indicate that lower rolling temperatures increased the ultimate and yield strength, the amount of cold work, and the degree of preferred orientation existing in these uranium rods."

Criticality Conditions for 1.75 Per Cent Enriched Uranium Slugs

Description: Abstract: "A batch of slugs is being prepared for which the U-235 content will be 1.75 per cent, and it is of interest to calculate the minimum number of such slugs required for a critical assembly in water. Using Handbook (CL-697) methods, a critical assembly of these slugs arranged in a lattice with a spacing of 5.5 cm."

Autoclaving of Anodized Slug Jackets

Description: The purpose of the test used to make this report was to determine if anodizing could become a part of the canning operation prior to autoclaving, other factors permitting, or if it must follow autoclaving.

Geology of Horse Mesa, Arizona - New Mexico, with Recommendations for Wagon Drilling

Description: Abstract: Horse Mesa is in the Navajo Indian Reservation directly on the Arizona-New Mexico state line. Uranium-vanadium deposits in the Salt Wash sandstone which caps the Mesa are fairly widespread and small tonngges have been shipped from two mines. The deposits lie 60 to 75 feet above the base of the Salt Wash formation and possibly trend northwest parallel to ore trends on King Tutt Mesa, a mile northeast. Carnotite and vanoxite are the principal ore minerals. About 6,000 feet of wagon dril… more

Preliminary Reconnaissance Work in the Rattlesnake Area, Apache County, Arizona

Description: From introduction: The Bluff-Salt Wash contact was mapped on aerial photographs. Mines and prospects were also plotted on the photos. The mines and prospects were studied and a brief description of the mineralization and its occurrence was written. These field notes, which will be given to Hatfield and party, contain data on the presence of carbon and fossil logs, lithology of the gangue rock, sedimentary structures, etc. Regional structure and evidence for igneous activity were also noted.

Investigation of Subsurface Isorad Methods, Temple Mountain, San Rafael District, Utah

Description: From abstract: The subsurface isorad method is an attempt to locate areas favorable for uranium ores by the use of contour maps which show localities having greater radioactivity. The construction of isorad maps entails the measurement of the area under the curve of a gamma-ray logo The figures obtained indicate relative amounts of gamma radiation and are used to locate the isorad contours. This work was started at Temple Mountain in the San Rafael Swell area during the spring of 1952. The purp… more

Heat generation in stored Redox wastes

Description: Fission product activities and heat generated by fission product decay as a function of time, in waste solutions obtained by processing uranium irradiated under the present Hanford schedule, were calculated. From these data, curves showing expected heat evolution in stored Redox Process Wastes, during and following filling of the waste tanks, were prepared assuming various modes of operating the plant and various production rates. Total heat available for evaporation of water from the tanks was… more

Airborne Radiometric Survey of the East Flank of the Big Horn Mountains, Wyoming and Montana

Description: Abstract: An airborne radiometric survey of parts of the east flank of the Big Horn Mountains was begun on June 23, and completed on August 27, 1952. An area of approximately 250 square miles was covered, and only two anomalies were found in the entire area. Flight lines were arranged in accordance with the geology of the area, particular attention being given to formations the stratigraphic equivalents of which are known to be uranium bearing in other areas. Two additional zones of radioactivi… more

Interpretation of High Energy p-p Scattering.

Description: High energy p-p scattering has been interpreted by several authors in terms of highly singular noncentral interactions. The triplet state calculations were carried out in the Born approximation and, together with the singlet, yielded an almost isotropic (c.m. system) differential cross section. Agreement with experiment was good at large angles but the theoretical peak in the forward direction, due mostly to singlet d scattering, was too large. It is not clear however that the Born approximatio… more

Remote mechanical operating methods vs rubber glove operating methods for the 234-5 process

Description: The present RMA Line has now progressed through the run-in period and is engaged in actual production. Considerable new data and experiences are available for use in an evaluation of the basis used for design of the equipment in regard to contamination control and the safety of operating and maintenance personnel. Research and development funds have been allocated to the improvement of the 234-5 process equipment. Thus it is desirable that an up-to-date basis be established for use as criteria … more

The dynamic-response characteristics of a 35 degree swept-wing airplane as determined from flight measurements

Description: From Summary: "The longitudinal and lateral-directional dynamic-response characteristics of a 35 degree swept-wing fighter-type airplane determined from flight measurements are presented and compared with predictions based on theoretical studies and wind-tunnel data. Flights were made at an altitude of 35,000 feet covering the Mach number range of 0.50 to 1.04. A limited amount of lateral-directional data were also obtained at 10,000 feet. The flight consisted essentially of recording transient… more
