Cost/risk/benefit analysis report on the decontamination and decommissioning of Z-plant

Description: This study was performed to estimate the cost of decontaminating and decommissioning Z-Plant. All of the buildings in the Z-Plant exclusion area except Building 2736-Z, the plutonium storage vault, are included in the study. The study also excludes all underground facilities within the exclusion area which are not contained within a building and all Z-Plant related facilities outside the perimeter fence. The contamination in Z-Plant is primarily /sup 239/Pu which has a half-life of 24,360 years… more

Experiments in Cold Fusion

Description: The work of Steve Jones and others in muon-catalyzed cold fusion of deuterium and hydrogen suggests the possibility of such fusion catalyzed by ions, or combinations of atoms, or more-or-less free electrons in solid and liquid materials. A hint that this might occur naturally comes from the heat generated in volcanic action in subduction zones on the earth. It is questionable whether the potential energy of material raised to the height of a midocean ridge and falling to the depth of an ocean t… more

Tritium waste control: April--June 1978. [Catalytic exchange detritiation; liquid waste decontamination; fixation in polymer impregnated concrete; management of high specific activity tritiated wastes]

Description: The Combined Electrolysis Catalytic Exchange system was operated to experimentally determine mass transfer coefficients and to test the process controller. Values for H/sub OG/ and K/sub tilde y/a were obtained at three separate molar flow ratios (tilde L/tilde G). Replicate values of K/sub tilde y/a from additional runs agreed with initial results to within 16%. Two process controller tests were completed that demonstrated the reliability of the system hardware and the feasibility of the digit… more

Preliminary remedial action objectives for the Tank 16 groundwater operable unit

Description: Tank 16 is a High Level Radioactive Waste tank in the H-Area Tank Farm on the Savannah River Site that was placed into service in May 1959. A leak was detected in one of the construction weld joints while the tank was being filled. Before jet evacuation of the tank waste was completed, the leak overflowed the annulus pan and an estimated 16 to 700 gallons of waste escaped to the environment (soil and groundwater) over a six hour period contaminating approximately 1,600--70,000 cubic feet of soi… more

(Radiological assessments of radionuclide releases)

Description: As a consequence of the Chernobyl accident, data have been obtained throughout the Northern Hemisphere on the concentrations of radionuclides in air, vegetation, soil, water, and foodstuffs that could be important means of human exposure. At the IAEA's invitation, the traveler reviewed recently published data and handbook summaries. The traveler evaluated the need for revising the default values recommended in Chapter 5, Terrestrial and Aquatic Food Chain Transport,'' of IAEA Safety Series No. … more

International safeguards: Accounting for nuclear materials

Description: Nuclear safeguards applied by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are one element of the non-proliferation regime'', the collection of measures whose aim is to forestall the spread of nuclear weapons to countries that do not already possess them. Safeguards verifications provide evidence that nuclear materials in peaceful use for nuclear-power production are properly accounted for. Though carried out in cooperation with nuclear facility operators, the verifications can provide assuran… more

Level densities and gamma-ray strength functions in 170,171,172-Yb

Description: Level densities and radiative strength functions in {sup 171}Yb and {sup 170}Yb nuclei have been measured using the {sup 171}Yb({sup 3}He{sup 3}He{gamma}){sup 171}Yb and {sup 171}Yb({sup 3}He,{alpha}{gamma}){sup 170}Yb reactions. New data on {sup 171}Yb are compared to a previous measurement for {sup 171}Yb from the {sup 172}Yb({sup 3}He,{alpha}{gamma}){sup 171}Yb reaction. Systematics of level densities and radiative strength functions in {sup 170,171,172}Yb are established. The entropy excess… more

Final Technical Report for "Ice nuclei relation to aerosol properties: Data analysis and model parameterization for IN in mixed-phase clouds" (DOE/SC00002354)

Description: Clouds play an important role in weather and climate. In addition to their key role in the hydrologic cycle, clouds scatter incoming solar radiation and trap infrared radiation from the surface and lower atmosphere. Despite their importance, feedbacks involving clouds remain as one of the largest sources of uncertainty in climate models. To better simulate cloud processes requires better characterization of cloud microphysical processes, which can affect the spatial extent, optical depth and li… more

Studying neutron-rich 18 N in fusion-evaporation reactions

Description: Light neutron-rich nuclei provide an excellent opportunity to study the changes in nuclear shell structure that occur with increasing neutron number and are an important testing ground for shell model theories. Probably one of the most striking examples of shell modification is the occurrence of intruder ground states, which signal an inversion of the normal shell ordering. Intruder ground states are observed around {sup 32}Mg (Z=10-12), ''the island of inversion'', and in {sup 11}Be. An analog… more

Laser cleanup of Pt group metals

Description: Due to increasing interest in chemical and fuel synthesis from syngas, the feasibility and practicality of purifying Pt group metals (Pd, Ru, Rh) using LIS technologies have been re-evaluated. Findings for the selective removal of /sup 107/Pd from Pd metal are described here. The selectivity of this technique is based on the angular momentum selection rules for atomic absorption of circularly polarized light. In principle, it is possible to selectively excite isotopes with non-zero nuclear spin… more

In the model, H/sup 79/Br is selectively excited by resonance IR laser radiation and then dissociated by uv radiation. Selectively dissociated Br atoms are scavenged to form isotopically enriched BrNO and Br/sub 2/.
