Parametrization of net radiation at the surface using data from the Wangara experiment

Description: Hourly Wangara boundary layer data (Clark et al., 1971) was used to substantiate previously derived empirical equations of the surface radiation budget. These equations only require measurements taken by a surface observer in order to be evaluated. A parameterization was made for infrared (IR) radiation. From this procedure, a residual radiation was obtained from the measured daytime net radiation data in order to approximate short wave (SW) radiation. Diurnal trends in radiation and other rela… more

A technique using a stellar spectrographic plate to measure terrestrial ozone column depth

Description: This thesis examines the feasibility of a technique to extract ozone column depths from photographic stellar spectra in the 5000--7000 Angstrom spectral region. A stellar spectrographic plate is measured to yield the relative intensity distribution of a star`s radiation after transmission through the earth`s atmosphere. The amount of stellar radiation absorbed by the ozone Chappuis band is proportional to the ozone column depth. The measured column depth is within 10% the mean monthly value for… more

Interactions between a tropical mixed boundary layer and cumulus convection in a radiative-convective model

Description: This report details a radiative-convective model, combining previously developed cumulus, stable cloud and radiation parameterizations with a boundary layer scheme, which was developed in the current study. The cloud model was modified to incorporate the effects of both small and large clouds. The boundary layer model was adapted from a mixed layer model was only slightly modified to couple it with the more sophisticated cloud model. The model was tested for a variety of imposed divergence prof… more

Observation of the submillimeter cosmic background spectrum

Description: An experimental measurement of the spectrum of the submillimeter cosmic background radiation is described. The experiment consists of measuring the night sky emission at an altitude of 39 km, correcting for the atmospheric molecular line emission, and placing limits on the contamination from sources of continuum radiation such as the apparatus itself and the earth. The observations were made on 24 July 1974 using a fully calibrated liquid-helium-cooled balloon- borne spectrophotometer. Importan… more

Spatio-temporal statistical models with applications to atmospheric processes

Description: This doctoral dissertation is presented as three self-contained papers. An introductory chapter considers traditional spatio-temporal statistical methods used in the atmospheric sciences from a statistical perspective. Although this section is primarily a review, many of the statistical issues considered have not been considered in the context of these methods and several open questions are posed. The first paper attempts to determine a means of characterizing the semiannual oscillation (SAO) s… more
