Two-photon interactions from Mark II at SPEAR

Description: Results on the two-photon production of the eta', f(1270), A/sub 2/(1310), and f'(1515) mesons at SPEAR energies are presented using data taken with the Mark II detector. The radiative width of the eta' has been determined to be GAMMA/sub ..gamma gamma../(eta') = 5.8 +- 1.1 keV (20% systematic uncertainty). Upper limits for the radiative widths of the f, A/sub 2/, and f' have been determined.

A-dependence of inclusive hadron scattering at 100 GeV. Fermilab-Conf-80/47-Exp

Description: An experiment was performed to study the inclusive processes a/sup +/ + A ..-->.. c/sup + -/ + X, where a and c are either ..pi.., K, or p. The nuclear targets used were C, Al, Cu, Ag, and Pb. The Feynman x and p/sub T/ dependence of particle c was studied using the Fermilab Single Arm Spectrometer. In this paper cross sections are presented as a function of x at transverse momenta of 0.3 and 0.5 GeV/c for each target nucleus. The A-dependence is parameterized as sigma/sub A/ = sigma/sub 0/A… more

(p,n) reaction at intermediate energy. [100 to 200 MeV]

Description: The use of the (p,n) reaction in exploring effective interactions is reviewed. Some recent data on self-conjugate nuclei taken at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility (IUCF) are presented, and the differences between low- and high-energy data are emphasized. Experimental problems and techniques used are briefly described. It is concluded that forward-angle (p,n) spectra at energies greater than 100 MeV are dominated by Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions, while Fermi transitions (IAS transitions… more

Experimental study of the steady natural convection in a horizontal annulus with irregular boundaries

Description: The natural convective heat transfer across an annulus with irregular boundaries was studied using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The annulus was formed by an inner hexagonal cylinder and an outer concentric circular cylinder. This configuration models, in two dimensions, a liquid metal fast breeder reactor spent fuel subassembly inside a shipping container. During the test, the annulus was filled with a single gas, either neon, air, argon, krypton, or xenon, at a pressure of about 0.5 MPa. Fro… more

Search for extreme states in nuclear matter (or looking for collective phenomena)

Description: After some introductory background material, the report discusses data from single-particle inclusive reactions with emission of nucleons and pions. The anomalous neutron-to-proton ratio is explained; pion data show a possible indication of a long-lived fireball. The other major topic is multiparticle correlations (noninclusive data). The energy dissipation in the target nucleus and the process of total disintegration (target explosion) leads over to pressure effects (bounce-off) in the heavy f… more

Search for narrow structures in the anti pp annihilation cross section from 1925 to 1955 MeV

Description: The anti pp annihilation cross section has been measured over the CM energy range 1925 to 1955 MeV with an RMS resolution of +-2.5 MeV on the average. This search yields no evidence for narrow enhancements in the S(1936) region. Using an A + B/p dependent background, a two standard deviation upper limit of 9 mb-MeV is set for the integrated area of any resonance with mass between 1936 and 1942 and with width less than or equal to 4 MeV.

Two-photon results from SPEAR

Description: Results obtained by two experiments at SPEAR on the two-photon production of lepton pairs and resonances are reported. Both experiments find agreement of lepton production with QED expectations, and observe an enhancement of the ..pi pi.. mass spectrum in the 1250 MeV/c/sup 2/ region. The Mark II finds this enhancement not consistent with the decay of the f(1270 MeV/c/sup 2/) alone. The ..gamma gamma.. partial width of the eta' has also been measured by the Mark II.

Reaction of hydrogen and oxygen in the presence of concretes incorporating simulated radioactive waste

Description: The radiolysis of contained water, with the potential of pressurization due to the accumulation of these radiolytically produced gases, has been identified as a major concern for radioactive wastes fixed in cementitious matrices. One estimate of the pressure build-up is that about 100 atmospheres pressure could accumulate in a standard canister containing alpha waste after 100,000 years. Since the radiolysis of concrete is dependent on the amount of unbound or free water present in the system, … more
