Generic component failure data base

Description: This report discusses comprehensive component generic failure data base which has been developed for light water reactor probabilistic risk assessments. The Nuclear Computerized Library for Assessing Reactor Reliability (NUCLARR) was used to generate component failure rates. Using this approach, most of the failure rates are based on actual plant data rather then existing estimates.

Data banks for risk assessment at the Savannah River Site

Description: One of the lessons learned from many years of risk assessment experience is that mistakes of the past are soon forgotten if no method is available to retrieve and review these events. Savannah River Site has maintained a computerized data bank system for recording, retrieving and reviewing its incident history. The system is based on a series of compilations developed primarily for risk assessment but has been found to be invaluable for many other uses such as equipment reliability, project jus… more

Use a Preliminary Requirements Identification Document (PRID) data base to identify facility documents and components and to establish an operating envelope

Description: A challenge that arises consistently throughout the US Department of Energy (DOE) arena is difficulty in identifying the regulatory requirements for the unique operations of a given facility in a cost-effective and consistent manner. This challenge is further compounded by the hundreds of regulatory documents/statutes that must be assessed, as mandated by specific DOE Orders or facility components. As the missions of selected DOE facilities evolve or change, it is becoming of paramount importan… more

Automated knowledge acquisition for second generation knowledge base systems: A conceptual analysis and taxonomy

Description: In this paper, we present a conceptual analysis of knowledge-base development methodologies. The purpose of this research is to help overcome the high cost and lack of efficiency in developing knowledge base representations for artificial intelligence applications. To accomplish this purpose, we analyzed the available methodologies and developed a knowledge-base development methodology taxonomy. We review manual, machine-aided, and machine-learning methodologies. A set of developed characterist… more

Information systems to enhance technology exchange

Description: A fundamental part of international technology exchange is the compilation and dissemination of information. Worldwide environmental problems and technology development activities form the basis for important opportunities across the world and especially for those in the former Soviet Union. Recently, important agreements have been reached among Russian institutes engaged in environmental work and the US Department of Energy (DOE) and its national laboratories. These agreements will allow a sys… more

Using PL/SQL to automatically enhance CASE*Generator 2.0 generated forms

Description: The SQL{trademark} Forms generator in CASE{trademark} Generator can generate forms with many useful capabilities. Generated forms can be further enhanced by the use of the CASE{trademark} Generator forms template. The template can be used to make these capabilities easily included in every form in a system. However, there are times when capabilities need to be added to all of the forms in a system, that cannot be implemented with the generator or template. This is especially true when generated… more

Risk assessment for nuclear processes at the Savannah River Site. Revision 1

Description: The Savannah River Site, one of the US Department of Energy`s nuclear materials processing facilities, has for many years conducted risk-based safety analyses for the nuclear processes conducted at the facilities. This approach has allowed comparisons of risks to established criteria for acceptability. When the risk-based program was begun, it was evident that its success would depend upon having a compilation of data that was site specific. The decision was made to create a data bank of undesi… more

Automated call tracking systems

Description: User Services groups are on the front line with user support. We are the first to hear about problems. The speed, accuracy, and intelligence with which we respond determines the user`s perception of our effectiveness and our commitment to quality and service. To keep pace with the complex changes at our sites, we must have tools to help build a knowledge base of solutions, a history base of our users, and a record of every problem encountered. Recently, I completed a survey of twenty sites simi… more

Practical utilization of modeling and simulation in laboratory process waste assessments

Description: At Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), facility waste streams tend to be small but highly diverse. Initial characterization of such waste streams is difficult in part due to a lack of tools to assist the waste generators in completing such assessments. A methodology has been developed at LANL to allow process knowledgeable field personnel to develop baseline waste generation assessments and to evaluate potential waste minimization technology. This process waste assessment (PWA) system is an … more
