WAKE FIELDS OF A PULSE OF CHARGE MOVING IN A HIGHLY CONDUCTING PIPE OF CIRCULAR CROSS SECTION

Description: Expressions are presented for the electric and magnetic fields due to a pulse of charge, which may be oscillating transversely while moving down an infinitely long highly conducting pipe of circular cross section. The expressions are evaluated at large distances from the pulse and the fields are shown to decrease algebraically in the distance behind the pulse. In the absence of transverse oscillations the longitudinal electric field varies as the inverse three-halves power of the distance; in t… more

Encapsulation of high-purity germanium detectors

Description: The encapsulation of high-purity germnium detectors is very desirable in order to increase their versatility and reliability. However, rapid and extensive degradation is seen for all detectors made from detector grade crystals which are encapsulated in a simple vacuum. Extensive studies have shown that the cause of this degradation is hydrogen adsorption on the detector surface. There it causes the formation of a strong p/sup +/ inversion layer which in turn shunts the detector junction. Reliab… more

Temporal observations of the lambda5303 emission line profile during the 74 minute totality from the Concorde SST at the 30 June 1973 total solar eclipse: preliminary intensity variations above an active region

Description: From international astronomical union symposium on coronal disturbances; Surfers Paradise, Australia (3 Sep 1973). Apparatus was designed for installation on the Concorde SST to provide high resolution emission line profiles at the June 30, 1973 total solar eclipse. A prime objective was to obtain profiles that could be used to detect the coronal response to the 5 min periodicities observed in the solar photosphere. Stability of the sky scattered light, drastic reduction of seeing effects enhan… more

Nondestructive evaluation concepts applied to industrial use of acoustic emission

Description: Various nondestructive testing and evaluation concepts as applied to the industrial use of acoustic emission are presented. Emphasis is given to the characteristics of acoustic emission as a quique NDT method for use in the evaluation of the structural integrity of materials, components, and engineering structures. Also included is a brief review of some of the problems pertaining to the introduction of emission techniques to the industrial atmosphere. Several applications of acoustic emission … more

Plastic flow and strength of uranium and its alloys

Description: The mechanical behavior of uranium and its alloys is reviewed with special emphasis on plastic flow behavior of polycrystalline materials. The strength of uranium is influenced by crystal structure as well as by point, planar, and volume defects; wit these factors in mind, texture hardening, strain hardening, solute hardening, grain and subgrain size hardening, and precipitation and particle hardening are discussed. Temperature and strain rate influence the various strengthening mechanisms in d… more

PREFERENTIAL INHIBITION OF THE GROWTH OF VIRUS-TRANSFORMED CELLS IN CULTURE BY RIFAZONE-82, A NEW RIFAMYCIN DERIVATIVE

Description: Rifazone-8{sub 2} (R-8{sub 2}), a new rifamycin derivative, is shown to preferentially inhibit the growth of virus-transformed chick cells in culture. Macromolecular synthesis and glucose uptake of transformed cells are also appreciably decreased in the presence of low concentrations of R-8{sub 2} where the normal cells appear unaffected. While R-8{sub 2} is shown to be a selective inhibitor of RNA-directed DNA polymerase in vitro, its action on the growth of transformed cells may involve some … more

Bubbles and their implications for laser-fusion

Description: Bubbles are concentrations of electromagnetic energy in the region of the critical density that force out the plasma to form a void. Since the critical density surface is cratered, absorption may be greater than a smooth surface since a larger area will be available for absorption and the reflected light will have a large probability of restriking the critical density. The distance between bubbles is several wavelengths and consequently they may encourage Rayleigh--Taylor instabilities. The thr… more

Frozen ammonia micropellet generator for Baseball II-T

Description: A ''startup'' plasma at the center of the Baseball II-T magnet was studied. This startup plasma will be used as a target for high energy neutral beams to achieve the required build-up. The target plasma will be created by irradiating a solid pellet with a laser beam. Although a deuterium pellet would be superior because of purity, the development of an ammonia pellet was undertaken because it requires a simpler technology. The ammonia target plasma is physically acceptable for the initial exper… more
