SUPERFISH: a status report

Description: The computer code SUPERFISH was developed to calculate various parameters associated with rf fields in axially symmetrical cavities of arbitrary shapes. Since the introduction of the code in 1976, it has been in continuous use at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Over the intervening years there have been numerous utility improvements, and several technical additions to the program. These modifications and additions are described, and the basic capabilities of SUPERFISH are reviewed.

Measurement of the free neutron-proton analyzing power and spin transfer parameters in the charge exchange region at 790 MeV

Description: The free neutron-proton analyzing power and the spin transfer parameters (K/sub NN/, K/sub SS/, K/sub SL/, and K/sub LL/) were measured at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility at 790 MeV between 165/sup 0/ and 180/sup 0/ center of mass. A 40% polarized neutron beam incident on a liquid hydrogen target was used. The recoil protons were momentum analyzed with a magnetic spectrometer to isolate elastic scatters. A large solid angle carbon polarimeter was used to measure the proton polarization. T… more

Measurement of asymmetric flux in the gap of an induction accelerator module

Description: A unique transverse field probe is used to determine the effect of feed and load current asymmetries on the axial magnetic field symmetry in the acceleration gap of a linear induction accelerator module. The special probe was used to quantitatively measure transverse pulse magnetic fields down to one gauss in the presence of large common mode noise signals and 10/sup 7/V/M pulse electric fields. Module tests using the probe provided a direct measure of the asymmetric fields produced when unbala… more

Internal spin structure of the proton from high energy polarized e-p scattering

Description: A review is given of experimental knowledge of the spin dependent structure functions of the proton, which is based on inclusive high energy scattering of longitudinal polarized electrons by longitudinally polarized protons in both the deep inelastic and resonance regions, and includes preliminary results from our most recent SLAC experiment. Implications for scaling, sum rules, models of proton structure, and the hyperfine structure interval in hydrogen are given. Possible future directions of… more

E2 isovector giant resonance as seen through the capture of fast neutrons

Description: The forward-to-backward asymmetry of high-energy photons, emitted in the radiative capture of neutrons with energies up to 20 MeV, was measured for /sup 208/Pb. The asymmetry increases abruptly from small values to large ones near E..gamma.. approx. 23 MeV, supporting the location in that neighborhood of the E2 giant isovector resonance.
