Thermal convection at low Rayleigh number from concentrated sources in porous media

Description: A simple mathematical theory is proposed for the analysis of natural convective motion, at low Rayleigh number, from a concentrated source of heat in a fluid-saturated porous medium. The theory consists of retaining only the leading terms of series expansions of the dependent variables in terms of the Rayleigh number, is thus linear, and is valid only in the limit of small Rayleigh number. Based on fundamental results for a variety of isolated sources, superposition is used to provide solutions… more

Seismic velocities and attenuation in an underground granitic waste repository subjected to heating

Description: The behavior of a granitic rock mass subjected to thermal load has been studied by an acoustic cross-hole technique between four boreholes, over a period of some two years. Velocities between boreholes were obtained from the times-of-flight of pulses of acoustic waves between transducers clamped to the borehole wall. The attenuation was obtained by a spectral ratios technique. When the heater was turned on, the velocities increased rapidly to an asymptotic value. When the heater was turned off,… more

Disposal of spent fuel

Description: Based on preliminary analyses, spent fuel assemblies are an acceptable form for waste disposal. The following studies appear necessary to bring our knowledge of spent fuel as a final disposal form to a level comparable with that of the solidified wastes from reprocessing: 1. A complete systems analysis is needed of spent fuel disposition from reactor discharge to final isolation in a repository. 2. Since it appears desirable to encase the spent fuel assembly in a metal canister, candidate mater… more

Basalt nuclear-waste repository remote sensing using electromagnetic techniques

Description: The electromagnetic permittivity and attenuation rate of basalt, from the Near Surface Test Facility of the Basalt Waste Isolation Project at Hanford, Washington, have been measured in the laboratory as a function of water content at frequencies from 25 MHz to 1000 MHz. Both the permittivity and the attenuation rate are strongly related to water content of basalt in this frequency range. Completely dehydrated, the rock has a frequency-independent relative permittivity of about 8 and attenuation… more

Borehole-inclusion stressmeter measurements in bedded salt

Description: Sandia purchased borehole-inclusion stressmeters from a commercial supplier to measure in situ stress changes in bedded salt. However, the supplied stressmeters were difficult to set in place and gave erratic results in bedded salt. These problems were overcome with a new extended platen design. Also a straingaged transducer was designed which can be read with a conventional data logger. Due to the nonlinear behavior of bedded salt under uniaxial loading, a new empirical calibration scheme was … more

Geotechnical Properties of Sediments From North Pacific and Northern Bermuda Rise

Description: Studies of geotechnical properties for the Sub-seabed Disposal Program have been oriented toward sediment characterization related to effectiveness as a containment media and determination of detailed engineering behavior. Consolidation tests of the deeper samples in the North Pacific clays indicate that the sediment column is normally consolidated. The in-situ coefficient of permeability (k) within the cored depth of 25 meters is relatively constant at 10/sup -7/ cm/sec. Consolidated undrained… more

Multicomponent mass transport model: a model for simulating migration of radionuclides in ground water

Description: This report presents the results of the development of a one-dimensional radionuclide transport code, MMT2D (Multicomponent Mass Transport), for the AEGIS Program. Multicomponent Mass Transport is a numerical solution technique that uses the discrete-parcel-random-wald (DPRW) method to directly simulate the migration of radionuclides. MMT1D accounts for: convection;dispersion; sorption-desorption; first-order radioactive decay; and n-membered radioactive decay chains. Comparisons between MMT1D … more

Description: A federal geologic repository is being considered for the disposal of radioactive waste. The geological literature on the Southern Piedmont was studied to identify rock bodies worthy of field exploration for site selection. The study was geotechnical in nature and no consideration was given to socioeconomic factors. There were 13 geotechnical criteria applied in this study of the Southern Piedmont to arrive at a recommendation for further studies on 29 rock bodies. In general, information from … more
