Summary of the international discussion meeting on radiation effects on superconductivity

Description: The purpose of organizing a discussion meeting on radiation effects on superconductivity was to bring researchers in the field together for the first time in order to actively discuss the present status and future direction of the field. One discussion centered around the research tools being applied to this area for the first time. Whereas in the past the measurements have primarily been J/sub c/, T/sub c/, rho, magnetic susceptibility, ac losses, and x-ray diffraction, talks were given on the… more

Magnetic correlations in high T/sub c/ oxides: Neutron scattering studies

Description: A review is given of current neutron scattering experiments on La/sub 2/minus/x/Sr/sub x/CuO/sub 4/ and Nd/sub 2/minus/x/Ce/sub x/CuO/sub 4/. Incommensurate magnetic excitations are observed in a high quality single crystal of La/sub 1.85/Sr/sub 0.15/CuO/sub 4/, which exhibits a sharp superconducting transition at 33 K. The study of magnetic correlations in the electron-superconductor Nd/sub 2/minus/x/Ce/sub x/CuO/sub 4/ is now being carried out. 18 refs., 7 figs.

Crystal Field Interaction and Magnetic Order in GdBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/

Description: We report experimental data on the crystal field interaction of Gd ions with their environment in Gd/sub x/Eu/1-x/Ba/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/. The ESR spectrum and a Schotiky anomaly in the specific heat of dilute samples indicate the existence of a crystal field splitting of the /sup 8/S/sub 7/2/ ground state of the Gd/sup 3 +/ ions of about 1.5K. Since the single ion energies involved are of the same order of magnitude as the energies associated with the magnetic ordering of the Gd moments in … more

Specific heat of the high-T/sub c/ superconductor (Bi/sub 1. 66/Pb/sub 0. 34/)Ca/sub 2/Sr/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 10/

Description: The specific heat (C) was measured for H = 0 and 7T in the ranges 0.4 to 20K and 65 to 125K. The coefficient of the low-temperature linear term in C was 0 /plus minus/ 0.5 mJ/K/sup 2//center dot/mole. On initial cooling, an anomaly in C was observed at T/sub c/, but there were dramatic temperature hysteresis effects. 5 refs., 4 figs.

High-temperature series expansions for isotropic Heisenberg model in one and two dimensions: I

Description: This preliminary report considers all the clusters with n less than or equal to 10 and l less than or equal to 10 on a regular square lattice and uses the representations of the symmetric group to calculate their partition functions as a series in powers of the reciprocal temperature 1/T up to twentieth order. The contribution of these clusters to the free energy are computed for the infinite regular square lattice in zero external magnetic field. The contribution of the external field can be c… more

Some aspects of the theory of high temperature superconductors

Description: A qualitative survey of the theory of high temperature superconductors as strongly correlated electron systems is presented. Various microscopic models and their implications for the theory of the normal state are described. Constraints on the mechanism and many body theory of the superconducting state are discussed.

Langevin Dynamics Simulations of Large Frustrated Josephson Junction Arrays

Description: Long-time Langevin dynamics simulations of large (N {times} N, N = 128) 2-dimensional arrays of Josephson junctions in a uniformly frustrating external magnetic field are reported. The results demonstrate: Relaxation from an initially random flux configuration as a universal'' fit to a glassy'' stretched-exponential type of relaxation for the intermediate temperatures T (0.3{Tc}{approx lt}T{approx lt}0.7{Tc}), and an activated dynamic'' behavior for T {approximately} {Tc} A glassy (multi-time, … more

Viscous flux motion in anisotropic type-II superconductors in low fields

Description: The Bardeen-Stephen model of viscous flux motion in isotropic Type-II superconductors is extended to the anisotropic case characterized by a phenomenological effective mass tensor m{sub ij}. When the magnetic field is low and the vortex lines are aligned along one of the three principal axes, simple expressions for the viscosity tensor {eta}{sub ij} of the viscous flux motion are obtained as functions of m{sub ij} and the normal state conductivity tensor {sigma}{sub ij} for temperature T close … more
