Data telecommunications at the CSCF

Description: At Brookhaven National Laboratory data telecommunication for remote job entry, interactive time sharing, networking, graphics, and special purpose links became increasingly important--they now rival the more traditional over-the-counter traffic. The BNL Central Scientific Computing Facility (CSCF) responded to this need with a number of developments. The latest and most comprehensive of these is a ''front-end'' communications system built around MODCOMP II computers. To put this project into it… more

1979 breeding bird censuses and summary of 1977-1979 results

Description: As part of a program to characterize the plant and animal life of the Laboratory site and the surrounding region, the two breeding bird censuses originated in 1977 were continued in 1979. Twelve census trips were made to the BNL plot and 10 to the Westhampton plot by seven volunteer observers. Comparisons of data from the three years showed that the number of territorial males on the BNL plot did not change significantly, but the number of breeding species showed a continuous decline, from 18 t… more

Brookhaven National Laboratory Tandem Facility

Description: Our MP7 accelerator has had about 70% utilization in the past year, clocking 6000 hours, of which approximately 10% was at terminal voltages between 14.75 and 16.25 MV. This pelletron system, installed in 1977, has logged 40,000 hours, and to date has broken five chains, three in the past four months. There are still two chains that have gone the total time. The injector machine, MP6, with its three chains installed in 1980, has accumulated 18000 hours with no chain failures. About six percent … more

Accident Management to Prevent Containment Failure and Reduce Fission Product Release

Description: Brookhaven National Laboratory, under the auspices of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is investigating accident management strategies which could help preserve containment integrity or minimize releases during a severe accident. The strategies considered make use of existing plant systems and equipment in innovative ways to reduce the likelihood of containment failure or to mitigate the release of fission products to the environment if failure cannot be prevented. Many of these strategies… more
