Filters in P-10 production hoods

Description: This paper addresses the reported problem of insufficient air flow through the Fiberglas filters for the air inlets in P-10 production hoods. Since it appears that the replacement of the contemplated filters with either louvers or grilles will not impose any forseen difficulties and will definitely assist in the ventilation design, this substitution has been accepted. Air flow through the grilles or louvers is to be designed to attain a minimum lineal velocity of 200 fpm through the openings.

A FACILITY FOR THE STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF NUCLEAR RADIATION ON MATERIALS

Description: The Sandia Engineering Reactor Facility consists of a 5-Mw light water moderated heterogeneous-type nuclear reactor, a large dry irradiation room and the necessary laboratory space for the preparation and post-irradiation testing of material samples. This Facility will be used to study the effects of radiation on the engineering properties of materials. Equipment for producing additional environments of heat, cold, altitude and vibration will be available for compounding with the radiation envi… more

Measurements Through a Hot Cell Window Using Optical Tooling

Description: S>Optical tooling has been evaluated for the measurement of physical dimensions of radioactive parts through hot cell windows. Instruments were set up outside of a four foot thick lead glass window and by means of a grid plate which had been accurately scribed, a ''contour map'' or calibration chart of the window variations was recorded. Although the window was not specially selected, the readings were within 1.0% of the true dimension without using correction factors. One of the calibration ch… more

AEC Hot Cells and Related Facilities

Description: Shielded enclosures equipped with viewing devices and remote-hauling equipment for use in experiments and processes involving radioactivity are referred to as hot cells. The hot cell includes the biological shield enclosing the working space, viewing devices, special ventilating equipment, and special equipment for use in the hot cells, such as manipulators, cranes, machine tools, and measuriag devices. A hot cave is the same as a hot cell. A junior hot cave is a small-sized hot cave. A summary… more
