Iridium alloy clad vent set manufacturing qualification studies

Description: In 1987 the Department of Energy-Office of Special Applications (DOE-OSA) decided to transfer the iridium alloy Clad Vent Set (CVS) manufacturing for the General Purpose Heat Source (GPHS) program from EG G Mound Applied Technologies, Inc. (EG G-MAT) to the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant operated by Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Inc. (Energy Systems). The reason for this transfer was to consolidate the GPHS program iridium hardware manufacturing. The CVS starting stock of iridium powder, foil, and blan… more

The structure and properties of grain boundaries in B2 ordered alloys

Description: This report covers the period from April 1, 1989 to March 30, 1990. During this period further extrusions of fine-grained alloys of FeAl and NiAl with different aluminum contents were produced. Thus far, researchers have (1) completed room temperature mechanical testing which shows that the yield strength, {sigma}{sub y}, of FeAl shows a minimum near Fe-45Al while that for NiAl increases with increasing (nickel-rich) deviation from stoichiometry; (2) showed that the grain boundary strengthening… more

Operational readiness review plan for the radioisotope thermoelectric generator materials production tasks

Description: In October 1989, a US shuttle lifted off from Cape Kennedy carrying the spacecraft Galileo on its mission to Jupiter. In November 1990, a second spacecraft, Ulysses, will be launched from Cape Kennedy with a mission to study the polar regions of the sun. The prime source of power for both spacecraft is a series of radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs), which use plutonium oxide (plutonia) as a heat source. Several of the key components in this power system are required to ensure the saf… more

Optical properties and electronic structures of d- and f-electron metals and alloys, Ag-In, Ni-Cu, AuGa sub 2 , PtGa sub 2 ,. beta. prime -NiAl,. beta. prime -CoAl, CeSn sub 3 , and LaSn sub 3

Description: Optical properties and electronic structures of disordered Ag{sub 1- x}In{sub x}(x = 0.0, 0.04, 0.08, 0.12) and Ni{sub 1-x}Cu{sub x} (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.4) alloys and ordered AuGa{sub 2}, PtGa{sub 2}, {beta}{prime}-NiAl, {beta}{prime}-CoAl, CeSn{sub 3}, and LaSn{sub 3} have been studied. The complex dielectric functions have been determined for Ag{sub 1-x}In{sub x}, Ni{sub 1-x}Cu{sub x}, AuGa{sub 2}, and PtGa{sub 2} in the 1.2--5.5 eV region and for CeSn{sub 3} and LaSn{sub 3} in the 1.5--4.5… more

Iridium-alloy processing experience in FY 1989

Description: Iridium-alloy blanks and foil are produced at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory for use as fuel cladding material in radioisotope thermoelectric generators for space power sources. Until 1984, the material was produced from small 500-g drop castings. A new process has been developed in which consumable electrodes of about 10 kg are arc melted, extruded, and then rolled to produce the sheet products. The work performed during FY 1989 included the arc melting of three electrodes and the extruding… more

Anomalous surface phase formation on Pt sub 3 Sn <110>

Description: LEED analysis of the clean annealed surface of a {l angle}110{r angle} oriented Pt{sub 3}Sn single crystal surface indicates the formation of a multilayer surface phase which does not have the L1{sub 2} bulk structure. LEISS analysis indicates a surface stoichiometry of ca. 1:1 with Sn atoms displaced ca. 1.4 above the plane of Pt atoms. The surface phase is hypothesized to be a rhombic distortion of the {l angle}0001{r angle} plant of PtSn, which has a B8{sub 1} (NiAs-type) bulk structure. It … more

A study of electrolytic tritium production

Description: Tritium production is being investigated using cathodes made from palladium and its alloys with various surface treatments. Three anode materials have been studied as well as different impurities in the electrolyte. Tritium has been produced in about 10% of the cells studied but there is, as yet, no pattern of behavior that would make the effect predictable. 15 refs., 4 figs., 6 tabs.
