Neutron scattering studies of magnetism in the high-Tc materials

Description: In this paper, I shall attempt to review what has been learned about magnetism in the high-{Tc} family of compounds using neutron scattering techniques. Whether or not it is true that magnetic effects are involved in an essential way in the mechanism for superconductivity in these materials (a point which has not yet been firmly established), they offer fascinating examples for the study of magnetism for its own sake, being realizations of spin {1/2} 2D quantum antiferromagnets. Further, the ra… more

Structure and shear response of lipid monolayers. Progress report, July 1, 1989--June 31, 1990

Description: Organic monolayers and multilayers are both scientifically fascinating and technologically promising; they are, however, both complex systems and relatively inaccessible to experimental probes. In this Progress Report, we describe our X-ray diffraction studies, which have given us substantial new information about the structures and phase transitions in monolayers on the surface of water; our use of these monolayers as a unique probe of the dynamics of wetting and spreading; and our studies of … more

Surface electronic structure of GaAs(110) studied by Auger photoelectron coincidence spectroscopy

Description: We have used Auger photoelectron coincidence spectroscopy to study the M{sub 4,5}VV Auger spectra of GaAs(110). Using this technique, the Ga and As spectra can be separated and studied independently. The lineshape of the As-M{sub 4,5}VV measured in coincidence with the As 3d photoemission line differs significantly from the conventional Auger spectrum. We attribute this to the surface electronic properties of the system. In addition, we have found that the ss-component of the As spectrum is mor… more

NQR-NMR studies of higher alcohol synthesis Cu-Co catalysts. Second and third quarterly technical progress report

Description: The primary objective of the project is to investigate the magnetic nature of the higher alcohol synthesis catalyst-Cu/Co supported on specific supports: chromia and titania with and without an alkali metal promoter, and examine the relations between catalytic and magnetic properties.

{sup 31}P NMR analysis of coal moieties bearing -OH, -NH, and -SH functions. Quarterly report, October 1, 1990--December 31, 1990

Description: Research on coal structural analysis continues. Significant progress has been made in developing a new NMR approach to the reaction in which the phosphorus-containing product incorporates two {sup 31}P nuclei for every water molecule reacted. The latter circumstance allows more precise values of low water contents to be realized owing to better integration of the {sup 31}P NMR peak. We have measured a series of model pyridine/H{sub 2}O mixtures by our technique and the results are summarized he… more

{sup 31}P NMR analysis of coal moieties bearing -OH, -NH and -SH functions. Quarterly report, January 1, 1990--March 31, 1990

Description: Research continues on the structural analysis of coal. In attempting to derivatize solid coal for solid state NMR analysis, we observed {sup 31}P NMR shifts in an unexpected region; these interesting leads will be pursued on the chance that the reaction we have evoked holds potential for yielding new coal characterizational information. Two very gratifying results have emerged from our {sup 119}Sn chemical shift measurements of a limited set of model compounds in pyridine. Firstly, the chemical… more
