A versatile apparatus for studying irradiated fuel behavior

Description: A computer-controlled furnace system in the Alpha-Gamma Hot Cell Facility (ACHCF) at the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois is being used to investigate the behavior of irradiated fuel materials under a variety of thermal conditions. The Fuel Behavior Test Apparatus (FBTA) is capable of accurate specimen temperature control over extended periods at temperatures up to {approximately}1000{degree}C, with short-term capability up to 1600{degree}C. The principal current use of the FBTA is to st… more

324 and 325 Building Hot Cell Cleanout Program: Air lock cover block refurbishment

Description: The high-density concrete cover blocks shielding the pipe trench in the hot-cell air lock of the 324 Building Radiochemical Engineering Cells had accumulated fixed radioactivity ranging from 1100 to 22, 000 mrad/hr. A corresponding increase in the radiation exposure to personnel entering the air lock, together with ALARA concerns, led to the removal of the contaminated concrete surface with a hydraulic spaller and the emplacement of a stainless steel covering over a layer of grout. The resultan… more

Safety Aspects of the IFR Pyroprocess Fuel Cycle

Description: This paper addresses the important safety considerations related to the unique Integral Fast Reactor (IFR) fuel cycle technology, the pyroprocess. Argonne has been developing the IFR since 1984. It is a liquid metal cooled reactor, with a unique metal alloy fuel, and it utilizes a radically new fuel cycle. An existing facility, the Hot Fuel Examination Facility-South (HFEF/S) is being modified and equipped to provide a complete demonstration of the fuel cycle. This paper will concentrate on saf… more

Inspection of contaminated hot cell ductwork

Description: Radiation Sterilization, Incorporated (RSI), of Dekalb County, Georgia, has used Cesium-137 radiation sources for sterilization of medical instruments and other commercial items. The cesium is contained in welded stainless steel capsules. One of these capsules has leaked, allowing the cesium to escape and to contaminate the internals of the sterilization cells including the cell ventilation ductwork penetrating the thick concrete cell roof. This ductwork requires decontamination prior to releas… more

324 and 325 Building hot cell cleanout program: Decontamination of C-Cell

Description: During FY 1989 the decontamination of C-Cell of Hanford's 324 Building was completed as part of the 324 and 325 Building Hot Cell Cleanout Program sponsored by the DOE Nuclear Energy's Surplus Facilities Management Program. The decontamination effort was completed using a series of remote and contact decontamination techniques. Initial radiation readings in C-Cell averaged 50 rad/hr and were reduced remotely to less than 200 mrad/hr using an alkaline foam cleaner followed by a 5000-psi water fl… more

The Integral Fast Reactor (IFR) concept

Description: In addition to maintaining the viability of its present commercial nuclear technology, a principal challenge in the US in the 1990s and beyond will be to regain and maintain a position among the world leadership in advanced reactor research and development. In this paper we'll discuss factors which we believe should today provide the rationale and focus for advanced reactor R and D, and we will then review the status of the major US effort, the Integral Fast Reactor (IFR) program.

Head-end reprocessing equipment remote maintenance demonstration

Description: Prototype equipment for reprocessing breeder reactor nuclear fuel was installed in the Remote Operation and Maintenance Demonstration (ROMD) area of the Consolidated Fuel Reprocessing Program (CFRP) facility at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in order to evaluate the design of this equipment in a cold mock-up of a remotely maintained hot cell. This equipment included the Remote Disassembly System (RDS) and the Remote Shear System (RSS). These systems were disassembled and reassembled r… more
